The lively Latin sounds and flavors of Miami’s South Beach make Gloria Estefan’s Bongos a popular choice. Black bean hummus ($9), seafood platter ($45), criollo shrimp ($26), skirt steak ($30), shredded beef ($20), fried plantains ($6), and flan ($5.75) are some of the authentic Cuban choices. The lunch menu offers mainly sandwiches. The bar serves classic rum drinks, including the Mojito ($14), a refreshing mix of white rum, mint, and sugar. An outdoor counter (Bongos Cuban Cafe Express) serves sandwiches and snacks from 11:00 am–11:00 pm. |

The funky House of Blues’ menu has changed away from its Cajun and creole offerings to a more varied menu. The cornbread ($8.50), pulled pork sandwich ($15), and jambalaya ($25) are two beats ahead of any place similar in the “World,” and you can get fine burgers, meatloaf, steaks, ribs, salads and sandwiches, too. The “HOB” looks like a weather-beaten wharfside dive. Inside is an equally aged interior with comfy booths. Live blues bands keep the joint cookin’. Headliners play at the concert hall next door. A Gospel Brunch is held every Sunday (see page 266 for details). Open to 2:00 am on Thu.–Sat. |

Recently re-opened and re-themed, Planet Hollywood Observatory’s big globe is full of movie and TV memorabilia with an out-of-this-world twist. There’s seating on several levels, with a massive 4,500-square-foot video wall featuring state-of-the-art sound and media. Stars are projected on the huge domed ceiling, too. The revamped menu (with signature burgers by Guy Fieri) can please almost anyone, with appetizers ($10.99–$12.99, samplers are $29.99–$24.99), entree salads ($17.99–$19.99), pastas ($19.99–$20.99), big bite burgers ($15.99–$18.99), knuckle sandwiches ($14.99–$17.99), and grilled and roasted meats ($21.99–$29.99). The supernova shakes (strawberry big bang, cosmic cotton candy, and chocolate comet) look to be a big hit at $14. Stargazers Bar is here as well—it's your basic lounge with local Florida craft beer and its own menu. |

Enjoy your eats while bowling, or just dine at a table and watch—either way this is a fun, if noisy, place to enjoy a meal. Typical American pub food such as loaded fries ($12) and pizza ($14–$18) join other offerings such as California roll ($11), barbecue chicken salad ($15) and mahi mahi with voodoo shrimp ($26). Kids meals are $7–$8. If you want to bowl while you eat, it’s $17–$22/person for 90 minutes (arrive before 4:00 pm for better deals)—but remember, you’re on the clock if you eat while you bowl! |

This big, fancy Starbucks (there’s a smaller one in the Marketplace) has innovative features such as a grass roof (fed by recycled coffee grounds), an interactive screen that links to the Starbucks in Anaheim (you can draw your own messages on it), and a special Starbucks Reserved counter with rare and exotic coffees (a wee bit higher priced, but not bad). Of course, your usual Starbucks favorites and bakery items are available for sale as well (see page 235). Indoor and outdoor seating (with outdoor fireplace and moss mural). |

Puck is famous for nearly single-handedly popularizing California cuisine and for putting wood-fired, individual pizzas on the map. Menu favorites include crab cake ($16), bacon-wrapped meatloaf ($20), bruschetta ($12), pesto chicken ($23), those legendary pizzas including BBQ chicken ($17) and roasted salmon ($28), and his Chinois chicken salad ($16). Oh, and the sushi bar is to die for! Desserts include Florida key lime pie ($9), brownie sundae ($9), classic carrot cake ($10), and cheesecake ($9). Kids meals include spaghetti ($7), California roll ($9), and pepperoni pizza ($9). The decor is trendy, the tables for two are too small, service is spotty, and dinnertime seating requires long waits. If you’re in a rush, dine at the bar or outdoors. Conditions are much nicer at lunch. |
