Touring Tallinn, Estonia

Touring Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is an easy destination in which to “choose your own adventure.” Many of the major sights are within walking distance of the center of town, and you will have the flexibility of going back to the ship when your feet (or your children) have had enough. Tallinn has an abundance of restaurants, shops, and small museums, and a leisurely visit on your own may not provide the historical knowledge of a tour guide, but it will allow you to experience what the city is all about. Our picks on what not to be missed include a visit to Old Town, including the center point, Town Hall Square. Tallinn’s Town Hall, built in 1402–1404, is the only intact Gothic town hall in all of Northern Europe, and is also the best preserved. In Toompea (the “upper town”), you will find another notable sight, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an onion-domed Russian Orthodox church built in 1900. Toompea Castle, with the addition of the pink parliament house in 1773, has been the seat of the Estonian government since the 13th century. If you would like a general overview of the area, followed with time on your own before heading back to the ship, there is a bus and walking tour that brings you to some of the sites outside of Old Town (Kadriorg Park and the Song Festival grounds) and ends with a walking tour within Old Town. More information on the many tour options can be found at the Tallinn Information Center.
