Touring Stockholm, Sweden

Touring Stockholm, Sweden

Most visitors to Stockholm head first to Gamla Stan, and it’s easy to see why. You step into a bygone era, with historic buildings at every turn. Start in Slottsbacken, and head for the Royal Palace (160 SEK/80 SEK ages 0-17 - $19/$9.50), as it tends to get busier as the day goes on. A guided tour is included in the price, although these cannot be booked in advance. While you may be tempted to spend hours here, don’t miss the Changing of the Guard, which usually starts at 11:35 am. Leave the Palace and admire the impressive Storkyrkan Cathedral, before strolling into Stortorget Square, the real heart of the old town. Here you’ll find the Nobel Museum (100 SEK/$12 - children free), telling the story of Alfred Nobel and his famed prize. To see a more unusual side of Stockholm, consider taking a leisurely and picturesque ferry ride across the archipelago to Djurgården. A few steps away from your arrival point, the masts of a ship poke through a modern building, heralding the experience to come. Step inside the Vasa Museum (130 SEK/$15 - ages 0-18 free), and return to the early 17th century, when this magnificent royal war ship sailed to its doom, only 300 feet from the shore. The historic vessel towering above you is an awe-inspiring sight! Outside, take time to explore the Lejonslatten (Lion Plain), a picturesque park with the turreted Nordiska Museet (100 SEK/$12 - ages 0-18 free) at its heart, the museum portraying life in Sweden from the 16th century onwards. Also nearby, Skansen, the famed open-air museum, depicting an 18th century town (180 SEK/$21, 60 SEK/$7 ages 6-15), is worth a visit.
