Touring Stavanger, Norway

Touring Stavanger, Norway

ON YOUR OWN

Assuming the Magic docks in Skagen, walk along the waterfront on Skagenkaien towards the base of the harbor, where there’s a large pedestrianized square. Cross this and carry on around the waterfront, until you reach Stavanger Sjøfartsmuseum, the maritime museum, a white wooden building. Take the path alongside the building and head up the hill. You’ll reach Nedre Strandgate, and here if you turn right, you’re in Gamle Stavanger or the picturesque old town. From here, you can wander as you see fit, admiring the homes here. When you’re done, make your way back down any hill towards the harbor. Head back to the square, and cross it, passing Burger King on your left. You’ll see the Domkirken or cathedral (open from 11:00 am), with the beautiful Byparken Lake and surrounding park in front of you. When you’re done here, retrace your steps back to the harbor, heading along Skagenkaien until you reach its junction with Skagen. Head up this road, which will curve towards the left. You’ll see the Valbergtårnet, the city’s fire lookout tower, on your right. Take the winding road towards it, as from here you’ll have a wonderful view over the city for a relatively easy climb up stairs. If the Magic docks at Strand, the walk to Gamle Stavanger will be much shorter, although the walk back from the lookout tower will also be longer.
