Touring St. John’s

Touring St. John’s

ON YOUR OWN

Saint John’s is a compact port, both physically, and in the number of shore activities that are possible. In town, Harbourside Park and the War Memorial are a short walk northward from the ship. Walk south along Harbour Drive to find whale-watching tours and the shops and restaurants of the historic Murray Premises. The Railway Coastal Museum ($7/$5 ages 5-17), and Newman Wine Vaults historic site are nearby, on Water St. Resembling a cluster of giant-sized fishing cottages, The Rooms Provincial Museum ($10/$5 ages 6-16) dominates the hilltop, with history and art exhibits. From there, walk north along Military St. past an attractive array of churches and historic buildings. Hiking is practical here; Grand Concourse is a well-marked regional trail network that connects downtown sights and nearby natural areas. Signal Hill, topped by Cabot Tower, is visited by all for the sweeping views. Johnson Geo Centre ($12/$6 ages 5-17) is a short walk from there, its mostly-underground halls house 3-D theaters, fine exhibits dedicated to science and the Titanic, and KidsPlace for ages 7 and under. Nearby Quidi Vidi Village is picturesque but small. The Plantation crafts center and the brewery may both be open for tours, and a small, restored battery guards the small harbor. The trail from here to Signal Hill is under a mile. Cape Spear is the rocky, eastern-most point in North America (if you don’t count Greenland), with a lighthouse, interpretive center, and WWII gun emplacements to add interest.
