Making the Most of St. Peter Port, Guernsey

GETTING THERE

Tenders from the Disney Magic will dock at Albert Pier in St. Peter Port on July 11 2017. All Ashore is 7:30 am, All Aboard is 5:45 pm. Public buses can quickly get you anywhere. The fare is £1, and free transfers are available. http://www.buses.gg. The excellent, official tourism web site has long lists of taxi services and bike and car rental agencies http://www.visitguernsey.com/getting-aroundFerries to Herm (20 minutes, £13/£6.50 child, round-trip, book at the pier) and Sark (50 minutes, £28.65/£13.30 child, round-trip, book in advance at http://www.sarkshippingcompany.com) depart from nearby piers.

ACTIVITIES

Disney currently lists 20 tours for this port. It's a nice cross-section of the islands' offerings, with little overlap, at good rates. They each have their charms, so no need to call-out winners or losers. Some Le Havre outings are similar (cider, coastal walks, WWII), which gives you a chance to mix-and-match. The nature/active set has lots of attractive choices, from Guernsey Cycle Tour (GU06), Coastal Cliff Walk (GU05), and the Puffin Patrol kayak trip (GU14), to Coasteering on the Isle of Sark (GU12), a unique get-wet adventure for those with the most energy to burn. Despite the name, you can do a lot of walking during "At Leisure" Herm Island (GU09) or Isle of Sark (GU10) and you'll pay more than you would "on your own" (see Getting There, above), but the convenience is worth it. Castle Cornet is easy to do on your own; it's wise that DCL offers only kids-focused Princesses and Knights at Castle Cornet (GU16). For history buffs, German Occupation Tour (GU04 & GU18) is a "must."

On Your Own: You can spend the whole day in St. Peter Port. Wander the winding shopping streets, including the antique and craft shops of the Old Quarter. Castle Cornet is a short walk from the cruise pier. Tour the extensive battlements, museums, and gardens, and witness the firing of the noonday gun for £10.50 adults/£3 ages 7+. The La Vallette Underground Military Museum is also nearby, inside German-made tunnels. £6/£3.50 children. Candie Gardens is a park overlooking the port offering grand views, formal gardens, a museum, and a teahouse. Victor Hugo's Hautville House is also near the pier. A tour of the house is £8/under 18 free, entry to the gardens is free to all. Reservations advised: http://maisonsvictorhugo.paris.fr/en/visitor-information/your-visit-guernsey The 91 and 92 bus routes circle the island, enabling visits to the island's many beaches and coastal fortifications

SAFETY

The islands are quite safe, especially lightly-populated Herm and Sark, but you should be on guard for pickpockets in busy St. Peter Port. If you're headed to a beach, leave valuables aboard. And wear sunblock for any outdoor activities!
