Recommended Shore Excursions in Reykjavík, Iceland

Recommended Shore Excursions in Reykjavík, Iceland

Of the 39 excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line, here are our recommended port adventures for first-time visitors to Reykjavík:

Low Budget: This is not a port for value excursions, outside of the usual city tours. Ring of Fire (RY14, $89/$59 ages 3-9, 5-5.5 hours) will get you out into Iceland’s volcanic and scenic wonders at a value price.

Big Budget: Eye-popping possibilities include Countless Craters Helicopter Sightseeing (RY04, $899/$799 ages 2-9, 1.5-2 hours, 45 minutes in flight), and Volcanic Island of Heimaey by Plane and Interactive Volcano Museum (RY02, $999 ages 2 and up, 4-4.5 hours). Reykjavík by Private Vehicle excursions run as high as $2110 for 6 hours in an off-road "super-truck" with room for up to 12 guests, but the driver is not a tour guide. Adding a guide costs another $329.

Nature: Iceland is home to 4x4 "super trucks," custom-made for the unique, vocanic terrain. You'll encounter these on Super 4x4 Adventure (RY25, $199 ages 5 and up, 4-4.5 hours) and Let's Go Volcano (RY05, $289, ages 12 and up, 5.5-6 hours). On the longer tour, you’ll explore a lava cave. We'd Go Volcano as long as the budget allows. On the water, Whale Watching & Whale Museum (RY26, $159/$89 ages 0-9, 4-4.5 hours) or Puffin Watching Adventure (RY19, $159/$79 ages 0-9, 1-1.5 hours) will introduce you to the wildlife on Reykjavík’s doorstep. Sea Angling Adventure (RY20, $149/$79 ages 5-9, 3-3.5 hours) trolls the waters near Reykjavik for cod, haddock, and halibut, and you can grill your catch on board.

Active: Iceland on Horseback (RY22, $149, ages 12 and up, 2.5-3 hours) introduces you to Iceland’s small, shaggy-maned horses. For Snorkeling into the Blue (RY18, $279 ages 12 and up, 4-4.5 hours) you'll don a dry suit to snorkel the icy, crystal-clear waters of Silfra Fissure.  White Water Rafting on the Glacier River (RY21, $379 ages 12 and up, 7-7.5 hours) takes you paddling on glacier-fed waters through canyons cut into lava flows. Expect both flat water and moderate Class 2 whitewater.

Armchair: The “Golden Circle” tour is a classic that includes stops at Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Geysir (yes, that’s where geysers got their name), meal included. The Golden Circle With Family Barbecue (RY12, $139/$79 ages 3-9, 8-8.5 hours) adds some whimsy at the same price as the standard tour. Bathing at the Blue Lagoon (RY07, $139/$74 ages 2-14, 4-4.5 hours) qualifies as gentle, except on the wallet.
