Touring Helsinki, Finland

Touring Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki’s biggest draw is historic Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress (Sveaborg in Swedish), on an island just off the coast. Take a public ferry from Kauppatori (Market Square) for 5. Admission to the island is free, but we recommend taking the 1-hour guided walking tour. 11/4 ages 17 and under http://www.suomenlinna.fi/en. Finland’s capital has three architecturally outstanding churches to offer: Evangelic Lutheran Helsinki Cathedral, which for many is the symbol of Helsinki; the golden cupolas of Uspenski Russian Orthodox Cathedral; and Temppeliaukio Rock Church, excavated out of solid rock. Entry to all three churches is free. If you’re interested in Finnish art, the Ateneum Art Museum, part of Finland’s national gallery, has the biggest collection; 13/under age 18 free http://www.ateneum.fi/en. Alternatively, the National Museum of Finland 10/under age 18 free http://www.kansallismuseo.fi/en/ as well as the Seurasaari Open Air Museum 9/2.50 ages 7-17/under age 7 free http://www.kansallismuseo.fi/en/ take you on a journey through Finnish history. On a walk through Helsinki, be sure to stop at Senate Square in front of Helsinki Cathedral, the impressive Parliament building, and Market Square. A little further out are the Sibelius Monument, made to look like organ pipes, and the Olympic Stadion, where a 235-feet-high tower offers panoramic views over the city, though the tower will be closed through 2019 for renovation. Lastly, Esplanade Park in the heart of the city invites visitors to take a break from the hustle and bustle of sightseeing.
