Making the Most of the Hebrides

Making the Most of the Hebrides

GETTING THERE

In 2017, the Disney Magic will cruise through the Hebrides on July 16, on her way north from Greenock to Kirkwall. Guests will not be going ashore; all sightseeing will be done from the ship's decks, verandahs, and portholes (Cunard calls this a "sail-by"). Disney Cruise Line has little to say about its plans for the day, other than that it will be a "romantic discovery." Though this is the first time the Hebrides appear on a Disney itinerary, it's not the first time the Magic will be cruising these waters. On the 2016 British Isles itinerary the Magic also passed through the Hebrides, only it was a regular day at sea; there was no mention of the islands in the itinerary or the Daily Navigator. The Magic will be sailing the waters that separate the Inner and Outer Hebrides. That channel is known by several names. South of the Isle of Skye, it's the Sea of the Hebrides. Between the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides, where passage is narrowest, it's called The Little Minch. North of Skye, it's known as The Minch. When sailing through Little Minch, northbound ships must keep to the right, so cruisers will likely sight the Isle of Skye, the largest and best known of the Inner Hebrides. It's harder to predict what other islands will be seen.
