ACTIVITIES

Disney Cruise Line currently lists 39 excursions for Greenock, offering a mix of urban and rural. If you have your heart set on Edinburgh, you have six choices, including an affordable "on your own" (GR14). Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace (GR16 & GR43) will scratch most itches, but if the kids are going to sit four-plus hours on the bus, they deserve Be Brave at Edinburgh Castle (GR45), with its one-hour kid's activity. Edinburgh City Zoo (GR15) shows you more of the city than the name implies, so it's worth a thought. Another half-dozen trips focus on nearby Glasgow. Glasgow City and Kelvingrove Gallery (GR02 & GR42) surveys the sights and visits a worthy art museum, but we're also tempted by Gourmet Glasgow (GR05) and Glasgow Clyde Shipbuilding Heritage (GR03). No fewer than 13 adventures take you to or past nearby Loch Lomond, Britain's largest lake. Sheepdogs, Trossachs, and Loch Lomond Boat Trip (GR38) packs a lot into your day. We're also partial to Inverary Castle and Loch Lomond (GR08). Three tours take you to Stirling Castle. Though all give you a similar look at the castle, Bannockburn and Stirling (GR12) adds battlefield visits that will please military and history buffs. If you love engineering marvels, Falkirk Wheel Boat Trip (GR11) should float your barge, but the included stop in Stirling does not visit the castle. Some will thirst for a visit to Glengoyne Distillery (GR20), but why stop with a tour, when for $169 more you can Become a Single Malt Master (GR21) and exit with a wee (200ml) bottle of your own creation?

SAFETY

Crime rates are low in Scotland, but Glasgow and Edinburgh are large, busy cities. If you're headed that way, be sure to take all the usual urban area precautions, especially in crowds. Those bound for the countryside should be prepared for changeable weather; bring an extra, cozy layer and wind/raingear.
