Recommended Port Adventures in Bergen, Norway

Recommended Port Adventures in Bergen, Norway

Of the 17 excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line, here are our recommended port adventures for first-time visitors to Bergen:

Low Budget: As Bergen is so easy to explore, tours like Bergen Panoramic (BG01, $49/$29 ages 3-9, 2-2.5 hours) really aren’t worth it. Consider the 24-hour Bergen Card (240 NOK/$29, 90 NOK/$11 children). It gives you free city bus and light rail rides, free admission to most major sights, discounts at other attractions and restaurants. Purchase or pick-up pre-orders at the tourist information office http://www.visitbergen.com/en/bergen-card. Another option is the hop on hop off bus ($33.50/$17 ages 3-9), which stops by the cruise terminal. It’s good for outlying attractions, like the Norwegian Museum of Fisheries http://www.city-sightseeing.com/tours/norway/bergen.htm.

Big Budget: Iconic Norway by Train and Bus (BG36, $239/$189 ages 5-9, 9-9.5 hours) is pricey, and lasts all day, but it’s an amazing itinerary. You’ll take a train from Voss to Myrdal, change to the Flam Line, and head down the mountain to the village of Flam. It’s an absolutely stunning route, offering snow, waterfalls and green valleys, perfect for seeing Norway at its best.

Active/Nature: There are several options for getting active in Bergen, in part due to the many walking tours. Others offer a healthy dose of nature. Hiking Mount Fløyen (BG03, $55 ages 10 and up, 4-4.5 hours) takes you up on the funicular, then you hike 800 feet higher over to Blåmansveien for more spectacular views. Hardanger Fjord with Lunch (BG06, $179/$89 ages 3-9, 7-7.5 hours) is less energetic, combining a bus tour of Bergen with a ferry ride, another bus ride along Hardangerfjord, a stop at Steindalsfossen waterfall, a drive through Tokagjel gorge... Quite a day!

Armchair: Bryggen and Mount Fløyen (BG07, $55/$29 ages 3-9, 3-3.5 hours) takes you on a walking tour of Bryggen before heading up Mount Fløyen on the funicular for some stunning views of Bergen. Bryggen and Scenic Cruise ($109/$76) goes by water to Lysefjord, before taking a return scenic drive by bus.

Cultural: If you want to get outside Bergen, Troldhaugen with Private Piano Recital (BG05, $69/$35 ages 3-9, 3-3.5 hours) allows you to explore the home of composer Edvard Grieg, where you'll enjoy a 30-minute piano recital.
