Touring Bergen, Norway

Touring Bergen, Norway

From the cruise terminal, head into Bergen, and the first tourist attraction you’ll come across, in the park at the end of the pier, is Håkonshallen, a Gothic ceremonial hall, which is part of the old fortifications of Bergen Castle. You can pay to go inside (80 NOK/$10, children free), or you can wander around the beautiful grounds. From here, follow the waterfront road towards the famous Bryggen. These replicas of old timber warehouses are now home to a variety of shops and restaurants, and it’s worth taking some time to head inside to explore the offerings. If you want to learn more, the Bryggens Museum (80 NOK/$10, children free) will highlight the rich history of this area. Once you reach the end of Vågen Harbor, turn left and head for the Fløibanen (90 NOK/$11, 45 NOK/$5.50 children), the funicular train that will take you up to Fløyen Mountain above Bergen for some stunning views over the city (see photo above). Note this is only worth doing if it’s a clear day, as otherwise you may not see much. Feel free to alter the order of this tour to fit in with the variations of the weather, as this is one part you do need good weather for. When you return, turn left when you come out of the station onto Lille Øvregaten and visit the Domkirken, Bergen’s cathedral. Retrace your steps back up the road, until you reach Nedre Korskirkeallmenningen. Walk along here until you reach Strandkaien on your right, and follow it up to the city’s fish market. You’re back at Vågen Harbor, with the Bryggen in sight across the water.
