VICTORIA MAP

ON YOUR OWN

There’s a lot to see within the Inner Harbour area. Big Bus offers hop-on/hop-off tours with 23 stops serving every in-town sight mentioned here. The complete route takes 90 minutes, with 20 minute waits between buses. $36/$21 ages 6-12 at http://bigbusvictoria.ca. Big Bus also offers combo tours that visit Butchart Gardens and other sights. Horse-drawn tours depart from the corner of Belleville St. and Menzies. Five to six passengers can share rides that run from $55 to $250. Also on Belleville, the Royal BC Museum is a fine natural history/history museum. Next door, the impressive BC Parliament Buildings offer a free tour. Pacific Undersea Gardens closed in 2013. Tea may be taken at the Empress Hotel, or the James Bay Tea Room at 332 Menzies St. Chinatown is one block beyond the north end of Wharf St., and Antique Row is four blocks east of Wharf St. on Fort St. Both are near the Tourism Victoria office. Craigdarroch Castle is a restored Victorian gothic mansion about a mile east of the harbor. Out of town, the biggest attraction is Butchart Gardens (http://www.butchartgardens.com), 55 acres of formal gardens that began as a private estate in 1904. $32/$16 ages 13–17, $3 ages 5–12. Just down the road is Butterfly Gardens, a 12,000 sq. ft. tropical conservatory—$17/$11 students/$6 ages 5–12. There are about a half-dozen wineries offering tours (see Staying Safe, page 414). A drive that includes several wineries, Butchart Gardens, and Butterfly Gardens is just one possibility.
