Of the 28 excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line, here are our recommended port adventures for first-time visitors to Puerto Vallarta:

Low Budget: There are many budget-wise choices here, often costing just $10-$15 per hour; pretty low by cruise industry standards. Though we usually skip the basic city tour, Puerto Vallarta City Tour (PV04, $35/$25 ages 3-9, 4-4.5 hours) seems a deal thanks to its duration, the included snack and beverage, and the kids piñata party. Of the food/cultural offerings, Historic Towns & Tequila-Making (PV07, $50/$29 ages 3-9, 5-5.5 hours) offers a lot; the time on the bus is reasonable, you visit a variety of sights, get lunch, and a tequila tasting!

Big Budget: Just three experiences fall into the over-$300 category here; the Dolphin Trainer for a Day (PV23), Puerto Vallarta by Private Vehicle (PV35), and Bandaras Bay Private Sailing Charter (PV16, $1899 for up to 16 guests, ages 10 and up). We'd go with the sailing charter, which is a bargain compared to similar Caribbean charters. Rustle up a bunch of friends and enjoy!

Nature: Sea Safari: Horseback Riding, Snorkeling, and Paradise Beaches (PV27, $119 ages 12 and up, 6.5-7 hours) and Whale Watching, Snorkeling, and Kayaking at Marietas Islands (PV40, $79 ages 10 and up, 7-7.5 hours) both offer an appealing array of activities. One catch; PV40 includes four hours cruising to and from the Marietas Islands; let's hope sea life-sightings are plentiful.

Active: Outdoor Adventure (PV24, $134, ages 10 and up, 5.5-6 hours) takes ziplining to a new level, tossing in speedboating, a long trip by ATV, a mule ride, water slides... It holds just a slight edge over Extreme Canopy Adventure (PV08). Though you could treat it as a relaxing beach break, Las Caletas Hideaway (PV15, $99/$69 ages 0-9, 7-7.5 hours) includes such a wide range of activities at such a good price that it's hard to resist.

Beach Breaks:  Several excursions take you by boat to secluded beaches for a combination of recreation and relaxation. We've highlighted Las Caletas Hideaway under Active. Here, we'll call out Pirate Boat Sail & Snorkel Adventure (PV19, $99/$69 ages 0-9, 5.5-6 hours) for its mix of activities on board and ashore: breakfast and lunch, a pirate show, a treasure hunt for the kids, snorkeling, kayaking, and beach games. For a resort hotel-based break Paradise Beach Adventure (PV03, $69/$34 ages 3-9, 5-5.5 hours) delivers nicely; a beach, five pools, kayaking and other water sports, and multiple lunch options, all at a very good price.
