Of the 49 excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line at press time, here are our recommended port adventures for first-time visitors to Juneau:

Low Budget: Mount Roberts Tramway — At Leisure (JU37, $33/$16 ages 6–9/under 6 free, allow 1–2 hours). The tramway departs right from the pier, the views (on a clear day) are fabulous, and there’s plenty more to explore. The price is the same at the ticket counter, so why not book ahead? Best value? Take the Blue Bus to Mendenhall Glacier on your own ($30 round trip), pay the visitor center fee ($5), and spend all the time you want hiking and exploring the park.

Big Budget: Disney Exclusive Glacier Dog Musher for a Day (JU31, $836/$635 ages 5–9) Combine the breathtaking scenery of a helicopter ride with the maximum sled dog experience, add the cost of taking the kids (who’d never forgive you if you left them behind), and say goodbye to those spa treatments! Every helicopter excursion promises breathtaking views, and this is the port for ‘choppers (it’s float planes in Ketchikan). The biggest cost factor is the flight, so spend a bit extra for more time on the glacier.

Nature: Mendenhall Glacier and Whale Quest (JU44, $179/$105 ages 0–9, 5-5.5 hours) This combines the top two nature activities in Juneau, so what can be bad? Your time at the glacier is just an hour. You could take a whale-watch-only excursion, and spend several hours at the glacier on your own (see Low Budget, above).

Active: This category hosts some of the most inexpensive and expensive adventures. Mendenhall Glacier Adventure Hike (JU32, $99/$69 ages 8–9, 4.5–5 hours) takes you out into the wooded hills for spectacular views. On the big-budget side, why walk to look at the glacier, when you can take an Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek (JU41, $549 age 15 and up, 5–5.5 hours) on a glacier? If hiking doesn’t do it for you, Alaska’s Ultimate Rainforest Canopy & Zipline Adventure (JU42, $189 age 10 and up, 3–3.5 hours) may, but Ketchikan offers ziplining, too, with no glaciers to compete.

Armchair: Perhaps the ultimate sight-seeing trip is Enchanted Taku Glacier Lodge Flight and 5-Glacier Seaplane Discovery (JU48, $338/$279 ages 2–9, free under 2, but recommended for ages 5 and up, 3-3.5 hours). An hour of glacier flight-seeing time, a remote lodge in a spectacular setting, and an intimate grilled salmon meal. If this pushes your buttons, reserve asap, it books-up fast! There’s no shortage of ways to go whale watching, a very worthy pursuit—combine it with your choice of additional sights. If not whales, head out to Mendenhall Glacier in whatever way you wish.
