WALKING TOUR OF GRAND CAYMAN

There are many shops but few sights to see in George Town. After several hours of walking and shopping you’ll be ready to head back to the ship. Your tender arrives at South Terminal pier, a few steps from a tourist information center, the taxi stand, and tour bus loading area. North Terminal pier is just across the tiny harbor. A single road, known alternately as North Church St., Harbour Drive, and South Church St., lines the waterfront. As you face inland, North Church will be to your left, and South Church to your right. Cardinal Ave., opposite North Terminal, heads directly inland from the waterfront into the heart of the shopping district. Shops and malls line Cardinal and wrap around onto Panton St. and Edward St. You’ll find the Post Office at the corner of Cardinal and Edward. The shops of Anchorage Centre can be reached from Cardinal or Harbour Drive, directly across from the docks. The worthy Cayman Islands National Museum ($5 U.S./adults, $3/children) is across from the terminal, at the corner of South Church and Shedden Rd. Follow Harbour Drive a block northward to reach Blackbeard’s Rum Cake shop, and two blocks beyond, Cayman Auto Rentals and the Nautilus undersea tours. Follow South Church southward to reach Atlantis Submarines and a cluster of shops and restaurants including the local Hard Rock Cafe, Blue Mountain Cyber Cafe, and the Tortuga Rum Cake Bakery. A long walk or short cab ride along South Church brings you to small Smith’s Cove Public Beach, the closest sunning spot to the pier.
