CARTAGENA HIGHLIGHTS

Popular spots visited by official shore excursions include the old city, with four neighborhoods packed within massive city walls; El Centro, with the greatest concentration of historic sites—its Plaza de Bolívar alone can keep you busy for hours, surrounded as it is by the Palace of the Inquisition, the Gold Museum, the Cathedral (Basilica Menor), and La Gobierno, seat of the State of Bolivar. The well-known Clock Tower and the Church and Monastery of San Pedro Claver are also here. Other districts are San Diego, La Matuna, and the oldest, Getsemani, with its large Parque del Centenario. La Popa Hill rises about 500 feet/150 meters above the city in a wooded setting, just a mile from El Centro and beachfront areas. Views from the hilltop Convent la Popa are quite dramatic. Between the walled city and la Popa looms massive Castillo San Felipe de Barajas (see photo on page 276), the largest Spanish fortress in the New World.
