Dave meets a stingray at
Ray’s
by Jennifer Marx

This adventure begins when you check in at the Castaway Ray’s Stingray Hut near Gil’s Fins and Boats (see Castaway Cay map on page 245). After receiving your snorkel equipment (mask, snorkel, and flotation vest), guests gather under a shelter for a fascinating and educational orientation on the stingrays. This program was developed in partnership with The Seas With Nemo & Friends at Epcot, and cast members from Epcot are often the ones to give you your orientation. Among other things, you will learn that the barbs have been trimmed from the stingrays that live in the lagoon, so you and your family are safe from stings. After your briefing, you wade into the shallow water with the stingrays. A guide accompanies you and encourages the stingrays to come closer so you can view them up close and touch them. You may even have the chance to feed them! Special U-shaped ramps (see photo below) were created and the stingrays are trained to swim up them, giving you an unparalleled look. After this, there’s free time to don your snorkel equipment and swim among the stingrays for an underwater look. Note that children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. A portion of the proceeds from this excursion go to Disney’s Wildlife Conservation Fund. Typical meeting times are every hour from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Cruiser reviews are very positive: The experience was “enjoyable” as well as “educational.” The “innovative” stingray ramps gave cruisers “a better look at the rays” than on other stingray excursions. The stingrays “don’t bite” and their “barbs have been removed.” Cruisers “did not feel threatened” but the “snorkeling was poor” due to the stirred-up sand. Overall, most cruisers say they want to “do it again” on their next cruise.

Rating: 2

Board a 46-foot trawler with a glass bottom for an hour-long ecotour of the barrier reefs surrounding Castaway Cay. Typical meeting times are 9:45 am, 11:15 am, 12:45 pm, and 2:15 pm. Cruiser reviews are uniform: The “rocky,” “overcrowded boat” is filled with people “pushing and shoving” to see out the “cloudy” glass bottom. “Very limited fish” are visible. There are “very few seats,” meaning most have to stand the entire time. Overall, cruisers say “don’t bother.”

Rating: 9

Up to six guests can enjoy a ride around the Abaco Islands for bottom fishing (catch and release). Tackle, bait, and beverages (soda and water) are provided. Guests 12 and under must wear life jackets. Typical meeting times are 9:00 am, 9:30 am, and 1:00 pm. Very popular—book early! Cruiser reviews are very positive: The “friendly” captain takes you out to a “beautiful setting” to fish. There are “lots of fish,” and “plenty to catch.” Cruisers do note that there is no “head” (restroom) on the boat. All cruisers had a “great time” and considered it a “highlight” of their cruise. This excursion may be suspended without notice depending on the season and other conditions.
