Like the Sunshine Glass Bottom Boat excursion on page 259, this trip cruises Nassau Harbour before heading off to Athol Island. Unlike the Sunshine Glass Bottom Boat excursion, you WILL get wet! Snorkel equipment and instruction are provided for your open-water snorkeling adventure. Freshwater showers and a cash bar are available onboard the 72-foot boat. Typical meeting time is 1:45 pm. Cruiser reviews are consistently good: The “great” excursion crew offers some “sightseeing” along the way to the island. Once there, the snorkeling is “awesome” and there was a “great variety of fish.” Younger children and “uptight” people may be “a little frightened at first” but the “crew is wonderful at relieving fears.” Chips and beverages (“local beer” plus soda and water) are available for sale on the boat. In sum, “it was great” and cruisers would “do it again.” (On Your Own: Stuart Cove’s Aqua Adventures at http://www.stuartcove.com, 800-879-9832)

Set sail on a comfortable, 65-foot catamaran with a large sundeck and shady lounge deck. After a brief tour of Nassau Harbour, you’ll sail to a coral reef for snorkeling (equipment provided). Sodas and water are served during the sail, as are snacks and alcoholic beverages after snorkeling. Typical meeting time is 9:15 am. Cruiser comments are mostly positive: The 20-minute sail is “enjoyable” and “relaxing.” The snorkeling is “wonderful” though some felt it was in “pretty deep water for beginners” and you cannot “touch bottom.” Most report seeing “plenty of fish.” Overall, most “loved it!” (On Your Own: Flying Cloud at http://www.flyingcloud.info, 242-394-5067

 Discover Atlantis   [N05]

This excursion begins with a 20-minute bus ride to the Atlantis resort, where you receive a guided tour of the resort and aquarium on Paradise Island. We did this excursion in 2002 and we enjoyed it—be aware that you will do a lot of walking. Typical meeting times are 11:15 am or 1:15 pm. Buses return every half-hour from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm—don’t miss it, or you’ll have to pay for a taxi. Cruiser reviews are mixed: This very popular excursion begins with a “capacity-filled” ride to Paradise Island, during which the tour with “very little narrative” could not be “heard or understood over the roar of the engines.” Once on the island, you are taken in “smaller groups” to the “stunning” Atlantis Resort, but the walk to it is “boring” because there is “nothing to see.” Inside you may “spend a lot of time touring the retail areas,” but then are led to the “breathtaking” aquarium. After the aquarium, some felt you were “left somewhere to find your own way back” while others enjoyed the “free time to explore.” Expect to “spend the entire tour walking.” Overall, some cruisers felt the excursion was “awesome” while others felt it “takes way too much time” and “wasn’t interesting at all.” (On Your Own: Atlantis Resort, http://www.atlantisbahamas.com, 888-877-7525)

You'll wander little more than a mile from your ship as you see Nassau's sights from the deck a party boat and the seat of a bus. You start with a one-hour spin around Nassau Harbour (complimentary rum punch and fruit punch are served), and follow-up with a 90-minute bus tour through the streets of Nassau and Paradise Island. You'll make one, 30-minute stop at Fort Fincastle for a panoramic view of the port, a peek at the Queen's Staircase, and a chance to haggle with the local merchants (bring cash in small denominations).
