WALKING TOUR OF NASSAU A self-guided walking tour around Nassau is a break from the ordinary. Grab one of the free tourist maps distributed on the wharf, play connect-the-dots with your choice of highlighted sights, and trace a route around the perimeter of the downtown district. Allow at least two hours for a nonstop walk or more if you want to spend time exploring. Finish before 5:00 pm, when the streets get empty. Here’s our suggested walking tour (highlighted on map above): Leaving Prince George Wharf, turn right onto Bay St. Near the corner of Bay and George St. is the famous (or infamous) Straw Market. Turn left up George St. to continue our tour, or follow Bay St. west to the beaches of Western Esplanade and the seafood vendors of Arawak Cay. On George St., you’ll soon pass Christ Church and the Pirates of Nassau attraction. Follow George St. to its end, and peer through the gates of Government House (see photo on page 251). Turn left again, cross Market St., and make your way uphill on winding Peck Slope to Hill St. for a commanding view of the port. Follow Hill St. to its end, turn right on East St. to Prison Lane, and follow the lane up to the Water Tower and Fort Fincastle. Exit via the remarkable Queen’s Staircase and follow Elizabeth St. down the hill. Turn left onto Shirley St., then right onto Parliament St. to view the Library (Old Jail) and the statue of Queen Victoria in Parliament Square. From there, it’s a short walk back to the wharf. |
