Of the 32 excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line at press time, here are our recommended port adventures for visitors to San Juan (note that these are only available on "in-transit" itineraries that neither begin or end in San Juan):

Low Budget: Excursions here tend to be reasonably priced, though the least expensive choices tend to deliver less value. Since you're likely to buy their product, perhaps the Bacardi Rum and Distillery Tour (SJ03) should cost less than $45 for adults. And shouldn't they charge the ages 10-17 rate of $30 for ages 10-20, since they can't partake of the tasting? All quibbles aside, this is a top San Juan attraction and you'd pay the same price if you visited the factory on your own (in other words, the bus ride is free), so if it tempts you, enjoy! Though you can tour on your own for next to nothing, Castillo San Cristobal, A World Heritage Site - Walking Tour (SJ21, $54/$35 ages 3-9) adds heritage guides in period costume and a bit of audience participation to the mix.

Big Budget: The real big budget option in San Juan is a pre-/post-cruise visit. For in-transit visits, only the San Juan by Private Vehicle options (SJ39-SJ44, $499-$1,199 per vehicle) cost more than $169.

Nature: To us, it's all about the rainforest. El Yunque Rainforest Tour & Nature Walk (SJ02, $59/$39 ages 3-9) will be perfect for the less-active, while Rainforest Nature Walk & Waterfall Adventure (SJ15, $109/$89 ages 6-9) gets you out on a more strenuous hike. Either way, 2-2.5 hours of your tour will be spent on the bus.

Active: You can zipline or get out on an ATV on many islands, but where, besides Hawaii, has DCL offered a surfing excursion? That's right! Surf's Up! Puerto Rico (SJ35, $129/$119 ages 6-9, Observer SJ56, $30 ages 3 and up) delivers a beginner-level intro to the sport, with a 30-minute lesson and an hour more on your own for honing your skills. Horseback riding is another Puerto Rican specialty. Both Horseback Riding Adventure (SJ25, $89 ages 9 and up) and El Yunque Rainforest Horseback Riding (SJ28, $99 ages 9 and up) deliver about two hours on the trail, but you'll spend much more time on the bus to El Yunque.

Armchair/Cultural: A Flair of Spain - Paella Cooking Demonstration and Flamenco (SJ57, $109/$79 ages 3-9). The name says it all, doesn't it? Well, almost—you get to eat that paella and sip a complimentary glass of sangria while you watch the dancers! (What's Spanish for "Yum?")
