WALKING TOUR OF CURACAO

The Punda neighborhood makes for a delightful walking tour. To begin, cross the Queen Emma bridge and walk one block southeast along Breedestraat. Turn left onto Heerenstraat and walk towards the waterfront. Along the way you may wish to check out the Postal Museum, which is one block southeast on Kuiperstraat—the museum is housed in Willemstad’s oldest building circa 1693. Continue walking to the waterfront to experience the floating market with Venezualan and local merchants selling goods from their boats. After the floating market, turn left and continue walking southeast along Sha Caprileskade to the Wilhelminabrug footbridge, which leads to a picturesque little neighborhood of homes built by wealthy merchants. Continue back across the footbridge to the big round building—this is the Old Market, an excellent spot to sample the local food at the independently owned food stands open between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. From the Market, take Columbusstraat two blocks southwest to the oldest continually worshipped-in synagogue in the New World—there’s a museum here you can visit from 9:00 am to 11:45 am. Continue along Columbustraat to Wilhemina Park—turn right here and walk to Fort Amsterdam (described on the previous page). From the fort walk south to see the Waterfront Arches promenade—this is a good place to relax and enjoy a cool soft drink or an adult beverage made with the locally made (and internationally known) Blue Curaçao liqueur.
