Recommended Shore Excursions in Tortola
Recommended Shore Excursions in Tortola
Of the 38 excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line at press time, these are our recommended port adventures for Tortola:
Low Budget: Nearly every BVI excursion involves a beach. There's a wide range of beach adventures in the $15/hour range. To some extent, just pick the duration you desire (3-6 hours) and pony-up proportionately. Some jaunts will simply take you over the mountain to Cane Garden Bay, others will add a short walk in the woods, maybe toss in lunch. But for similar money you can board a boat, head to a smaller island, and add some snorkeling to the beach break; Catamaran Sail and Snorkel (TT09, page 356, $94/$59 ages 5-9, 5.5 hours) or Virgin Islands Sail, Snorkel, and Beach Adventure (TT21, page 357, $55 ages 10 and up, 4 hours). And if the Baths in Virgin Gorda beckon, Tour to Virgin Gorda (TT23, page 358, $59/$42 ages 5-9, 4 hours) is a deal, $70 less than the other Baths tour just because you skip lunch (beach time is the same).
Big Budget: If you're going to boast of yachting anywhere, there are few better names to drop than, "The BVIs," and DCL offers more "Signature Collection" charters here than anywhere else. We prefer sailing to motoring; Discover Sailing (TT31, page 359, $1,599 ages 5 and up) gives up to 8 guests the chance to follow their skipper's commands during four hours on the water. Private motor charters run $3,599-$4,799 for up to 10 guests, but Private Catamaran/Yacht Overnight and Cruise to St. Thomas (TT30, page 359, TT30A, page 359) are so much more appealing! $6,599/$9,999 for up to 6 guests (three, two-berth cabins) gets you a full 24-hour adventure—three meals, snorkeling and swimming both days, then rejoin the Fantasy at her next port of call.
Nature: Dolphin encounters are offered for both St. Thomas and Tortola, but since the St. Thomas excursions bring you to Tortola anyway (and are more time-consuming and expensive, thanks to the extra travel), your day in Tortola seems the better bet. Plus, only Tortola offers Dolphin Swim Adventure (TT07, page 355, $169/$149 ages 6-9), which adds a belly ride to Dolphin Encounter (TT06, page 355, $129/$119 ages 3-9, ST37, page 292, $188/$162 ages 3-9).
Active: You can zipline from a mountainous vantage point, or hike, bike, or kayak around Norman Island, but we've always wanted to learn scuba, and the clear waters of the BVIs should make the lesson memorable. Discover Scuba in Tortola (TT48, page 361, $159 ages 12+, 4.5 hours). Already trained? Certified Scuba - Wreck & Reef Dive (TT47, page 360, $165 ages 12+, 4 hours) visits the wreck of the RMS Rhone and a second site for a total of 1.75 hours of dive time.
Armchair: Other than breathtaking mountain vistas, there's not a lot to see by bus, but if all you want to do is tour about, Tortola by Land and Sea (TT03, page 355, $75/$59 ages 0-9, 4 hours) adds another element to the journey.
