Key West Catamaran Sail and Snorkel Tour   [K05]

Set sail on a comfortable 65-foot catamaran with large sun decks, shady lounge deck, restrooms, and a fresh-water shower. The catamaran takes you about 6.5 miles (10 km.) south of the harbor to the only living coral reef in the continental U.S. Snorkeling equipment is provided for you to explore the reefs. Bring an underwater camera. Sodas and water are served, plus beer and wine after snorkeling. Cruiser reviews are mixed: The “great crew” motors the “super clean” sailboat out of the harbor, though a few cruisers report “no sailing, just motoring.” The snorkeling location “feels like the middle of the ocean” with depths of “20 feet or so.” Some cruisers report that “snorkeling is great” with “plenty of coral and fish,” while others note that “surge can be strong” and “kids may be afraid to snorkel” in the “bobbing water.” Overall, most “enjoyed it” but “probably wouldn’t do it again.” Guests must be ambulatory. No wheelchairs or ECVs. (On Your Own: Fury Catamarans at http://www.furycat.com, 305-294-8899 or 800-994-8898) Time in transit: 2:00

Conch Republic Tour and Museum Package   [K08]

Yes, you can do this all on your own, but if you’d prefer a more directed tour at a slightly steeper price, this is for you. First take an hour-long tour aboard the Conch Tour Train or the Old Town Trolley (xxxx). After the tour, you’ll disembark at Mallory Square to visit the Aquarium and Shipwreck Museum on your own. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera. Cruiser reviews were uniform: The “city tour” is “great,” conveying a “lot of info” in a “short amount of time” (good enough that some say it “made them want to visit Key West in the future”). The downfall seemed to be the Shipwreck Museum, for which you “have to wait outside for the group before entering” and “then listen to a guide” before you are “free to explore on your own.” The Aquarium is “ok” but many have “seen better at home.” In general, this excursion has “too much waiting around.” Wheelchair accessible (arrange with DCL). (On Your Own: See page 328.) A great way to get an overview of Key West and learn something on the way. The one-hour tour (either the trolley or the train) passes 100 points of interest and your tour guide offers historical and cultural commentary. We’ve done the Conch Train Tour and recommend it to first-time visitors as a friendly overview of Key West. Bring a camera. Young kids may get bored. Cruiser reviews are mostly positive: The “informative” tour is a “lot of fun.” A complete circuit of the tour route “takes about an hour,” which is “good for kids who can sit still long enough.” The “friendly tour guide” “driver” provides “plenty of information about the history and architecture” of “Key West.” The downfall to booking this excursion through Disney is that “you cannot get on and off it” like you can when you book it yourself (which is useful when you want to use it as transportation as well as a tour). Wheelchair accessible (arrange with DCL). (On Your Own: There’s not much reason to book this one with Disney—see page 328) Time in transit: 0:10

An adult-only version of K08, page 331.  Glass Bottom Boat Tour on the Pride of Key West   [K10]

If you’d like to see the underwater world of Key West but don’t want to get wet, this catamaran is your ticket. The catamaran boasts an air-conditioned viewing area and an upper-level sun deck. Your guide delivers a narrated ecotour as you visit the continental U.S.’s only living coral reef about 6.5 miles (10 km.) south of Key West. Cruiser reviews were mostly negative: The boat’s “bottom viewing window” is “way too small for everyone to use.” And while the viewing area is air-conditioned, the sun deck is “miserably hot” with “no shade.” The only refreshments were “sodas for a buck a pop.” Some cruisers also report that they did not visit the reef because “the tide was too strong.” Overall, most cruisers “were not impressed.” Guests must be ambulatory. No wheelchairs or ECVs. (On Your Own: Fury Water Adventures at http://www.furycat.com, 877-994-8998) Time in transit: 0:20
