For some cruisers, shopping is a major reason to visit an exotic port of call. Not only can you find things you can’t get at home, but prices on certain luxury items can be remarkably good.
If you plan to shop on shore, pick up the Port Shopping Map at the gangway. It lists recommended stores at which to shop, though keep in mind that these stores are included because they have an advertising relationship with the publisher of the shopping guide. The good news is that if you purchase from one of those listed stores, you’ll receive a 60-day guarantee on repair or replacement of an unsatisfactory item (but the guarantee doesn’t cover buyer's negligence or remorse, loss, or theft). Regardless of this guarantee, you should always ask about return policies before you make a purchase. If you have questions, the Port Shopping Guide (a PPI Group employee) is available at the on-board shopping presentations and may be stationed at the gangway or at the Shore Excursion Desk on deck 3/5 midship. If you need to make a claim after you return from a cruise (and within 60 days of purchasing the item), contact the Customer Service Department at PPI Group, 6261 NW 6th Way, Suite 100, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309, call 888-774-4768, or email email@example.com.
Live presentations on shore excursions and shopping are held during the cruise (freebies may be given out to lucky attendees at the shopping presentation) and later broadcast on your stateroom TV. Check the Personal Navigator for times. Stop by the Shore Excursion Desk on deck 3/5 midship for port and shopping information and excursion brochures (see examples at http://www.castawayclub.com). Desk hours are listed in the Personal Navigator, too.
Certain luxury items can be had for less in frequently visited ports. Here’s where your fellow cruisers have found good deals:
Alcohol: St. Thomas
Cigars: Everywhere but Key West
Cosmetics: St. Thomas, St. Maarten
Jewelry: St. Thomas, St. Maarten (Philipsburg), Grand Cayman, Cozumel
Perfume: St. Martin (Marigot)
Quirky/Artsy stuff: Key West
Silver jewelry: Cozumel
T-shirts: Key West (though all ports sell t-shirts, of course)
Watches: St. Maarten (Philipsburg), St. Thomas
Here are some smart shopping tips for great deals and quality merchandise:
• Be prepared. Know what you’re looking for before you venture out. And be familiar with the typical prices of the items you’re interested in so you know whether or not you’re getting a good price.
• If you want to deal but aren’t successful at initiating it, walk out of the store—this usually gets the clerk’s attention.
• If you’re shopping for jewelry, ask to go out in the sun to look at it—you may notice flaws in the sunlight that you could not see in the store.
• Check out other stores with similar goods before you buy. And before you leave the store, ask the clerk to write down the item you are interested in along with the price on the back of the shop’s card in the event you decide to return.
• Don’t settle for something you don’t really like.
