The New York area overflows with hotels, far more than we can evaluate for this guide. We suggest online travel search sites like Expedia.com, Priceline.com, and Kayak.com, which offer consumer reviews along with lodging rates. Of the areas to stay, Times Square is an obvious choice, close to the pier and from there it’s easy to go almost anywhere. We’ve picked two good hotels nearby, but there's plenty more. We also like the Central Park South/W. 57th St. area. Besides the park, it’s an easy walk to Times Square, Lincoln Center, and much more. Lodging is often cheaper across the Hudson in New Jersey, and can be very convenient to Midtown. Besides driving into town (the Hudson River toll is now $15 round-trip, collected one-way; and parking costs are scary). Ferries, buses, and commuter rail make it easy to leave the car behind.
