Getting a Passport Book

pPassport book applications are accepted at more than 9,000 locations in the United States, including many post offices, county clerks’ offices, and city halls. For a full listing, including hours of operation, visit http://travel.state.gov or call 877-487-2778. The same site also provides application forms and full information on the application process.

It typically takes 4–6 weeks to receive a passport book after you file the application, but we recommend you apply for your passport book(s) no later than 135 days (four months) prior to sailing, or you may have to pay extra to expedite your application. See below for details on getting a rush passport.

New applications for everyone including infants must be made in person (and for children, both parents must also be present), but passport book renewals can be made by mail provided the current passport book is undamaged, your name hasn’t changed (or you can legally document the change), the passport book is no more than 15 years old, and you were 16 years or older when it was issued.

Are you in a rush? Expedited passport book applications can be processed for an extra fee. If you apply through a regular passport “acceptance facility,” you can get your passport book within three weeks—pay an extra $60 with each application, plus overnight shipping. If you are traveling within two weeks, urgent passport applications can be processed at 26 Passport Agencies in the U.S., by appointment only. Services such as USBirthCertificate.net (http://www.usbirthcertificate.net) can do it for you, provided you first visit a local passport acceptance facility to handle the preliminaries.

Important: You need a birth certificate or other birth/naturalization record before you can apply for your passport, so you may need even more time! While there are services (such as USBirthCertificate.net) that can obtain a domestic birth certificate in as little as 2–3 days, if you were born outside the U.S., the process may take weeks or even months.

Budget $135 for a “standard” adult passport book application, $120 for each child under 16. Expedited (three-week) processing adds $60 to each application, plus next-day shipping costs. Passport renewals are $110. Duplicate/replacement birth certificate fees vary by state, but cost about $5–$15. Naturally, the help of a passport/birth certificate service adds even more to the price—typically an extra $100/passport, $50/birth certificate.
