Of the 27 excursions offered by DCL for Villefranche and the 21 trips offered for Cannes, here are our recommended port adventures. Note that when the same excursion is offered for both ports, rates and travel time may be different :

Low Budget: Most tours here are fairly economical, but Value Package - Nice & Monaco (CN10/V32, $89/$49 ages 3-9, 7.5-8/8.5-9 hours) sums up the category nicely. You will spend 2.5/3.5 hours on the bus, but will take in most of the major sights in those two cities. A key reason for the "value" is that lunch is not included, but that's true for nearly all other excursions of similar length.

Big Budget: As nearly always, the By Private Vehicle options carry the highest price tag, but you'll arrive at Casino de Monte-Carlo in appropriate style. Otherwise, only the whitewater excursion (below) comes close to fitting this category.

Nature/Active: Just one excursion qualifies, and even though we love whitewater, we wouldn't be tempted; the time spent on the water is too brief compared to the travel time and cost. White River Rafting (CN09/V30, $259/$275, ages 10 and up, 7-7.5 hours) delivers 2 hours of river running on the Var River, most likely in 1- or 2-person inflatable kayaks as you'll be there in low water season (8-person rafts are used in higher water).

Cultural: Nice with Wine and Cheese (CN03, $89/$39 ages 3-9, 4-4.5 hours) and Eze, Nice, and French Wines (V08, $114/$89 ages 3-9, 5-5.5 hours) offer similar pleasures, depending only on where you berth. Alas, the Cannes-based version does not visit the lovely town of Eze (but it also costs less). If you love scents, The Perfumer's Apprentice in  either Grasse (CN06, $125/$89 ages 5-9, 4-4.5 hours) or Eze (V13, $129/$89 ages 5-9, 4-4.5 hours) may appeal. You'll formulate your own cologne at the Fragonard factory nearest your port. The cruise line includes the classification "culinary" for Nice and Monaco (V25, $169/$134 ages 3-9, 8.5-9 hours), seemingly as it's one of the few tours that include lunch. Otherwise, it's quite similar to Value Package - Nice and Monaco (above), for $80 more.

Armchair Travelers: Most excursions here fit this category, though all do involve at least some walking; just choose the tour that best matches your interests. Having seen Monaco and Nice, we lean towards Cannes, Grasse, and St. Paul (CN04/V09, $109/$84; $69/$49 ages 5-9, 7-7.5/8.5-9 hours). You'll tour the same perfumery visited on The Perfumer's Apprentice (without the hands-on activity) and see the beautiful, medieval hilltop town of St. Paul de Vence.
