Of the 19 shore excursions offered by Disney Cruise Line, here are our recommendations for your visit to Palma Mallorca:

Low Budget: Every excursion offered is under $100, so how low can you go? At the rock bottom, Scenic Palma & Valldemossa (PM03, $42/$29 ages 0–9, 4 hours) gives the best bang for those bucks. Worst value? The beach break. That excursion for one is about the same cost as a round-trip cab fare from the pier, so two or more travelers come out way ahead by cab (you’ll need those savings to rent a chaise lounge). Want to save even more? The nearest beach, Cala Major, is just a mile from the pier.

Big Budget: Apparently, Mallorcans (and the cruise line) haven’t discovered a legal way to extract large sums from day visitors. That’s OK, you probably went over-budget in Florence or Rome, anyway. If you must, hire a car with driver for the day and go beach-hopping, or up into the mountains. Yes, $109 isn’t exactly big budget, but Valldemossa, Deia & Soller (PM06, $109/$85 ages 0–9, all ages, 8 hours) is pushing our buttons. The road trip alone may be worth the price, plus they toss in lunch (they’d better, on an 8-hour trip). The drive, much of it along narrow, steep, and winding mountain roads overlooking the sea, is breathtaking, and the villages visited are quite picturesque.

Nature: While a hike in the mountains or sea kayaking the coast would be very appealing, the cruise lines don’t offer those options. We do like the idea of Drach Caves and Porto Cristo (PM09, $72/$45 ages 0–9, all ages, 4.5 hours). While only the underground portion of the excursion fits this category, the caves are one of the island’s most popular attractions. And chamber musicians boating by on an underground lake? Hat’s off to whoever came up with that!

Active: Not only is it the only “active” choice, but Bike Ride through Palma de Mallorca (PM07, $79, ages 12+ only, 3.5 hours) is a great way to see the city. We figure you’re paying over $10/hour for the bike rental and $10/hour for the tour guide, but what the heck?

Armchair: Take the Soller Train Ride (PM04, $90/$75 ages 3–9, ages 3 and up, 4 hours). Read about it in our Getting Around section two pages back. Either do it with the cruise line, or do it on your own. The official excursion takes you by bus in one direction, by train in the other, though the bus portion follows the same route. Decisions, decisions!
