ON YOUR OWN IN PALMA

First, note that siesta is widely observed. Many shops, restaurants, and museums close around 1:30-2:00 pm and don’t re-open until 5:00 pm. Plan accordingly. An exploration of the old town starts right at the waterfront. Almudaina Palace and the glorious cathedral, La Seu are there, side by side. East of the cathedral, Banys Arabs is the Moorish-era public baths, one of the only surviving structures from that era. Passeig de Born is the place to stroll, sit at a cafe, or window shop, like Barcelona’s Las Ramblas. It’s one block beyond the Aludaina Palace, via Ave. de Antoni Maura. Outside the old town but within a mile of the pier, Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) contains reproductions of 22 famous buildings from around Spain, similar to the attraction of the same name in Barcelona. On a hill overlooking the pier, Castelle de Bellver is an impressive 13th century fortress with a history museum and, as the name implies, excellent views. The #50 city bus is a hop-on/hop-off tour bus that makes 16 stops, including right at the pier. Narration (headphones provided) in 8 languages. Service starts at 10:00 am, every 20 minutes thereafter, the complete tour is 80 minutes. €13/€6.50 ages 0-15. Beaches and Mallorca tend to go together, but you’re visiting at the height of tourist season, so big crowds should be assumed. The web site http://www.mallorca-beaches.com is an excellent resource, and there are plenty of excellent choices within 7–10 miles of the pier. Cala Major is closest, but you can do better.
