Updates:
What's New and Changed

Here are a few items of relevant news:

Good news for all you strong coffee lovers - Disney has announced that in response to guest feedback, it will be changing the formulation of it's coffee to be stronger.
The coffee itself will not be changing, just the ratio of coffee to water that is used to brew it.

Diamond Horseshoe in the Magic Kingdom will be open for dinner during Thanksgiving week from November 26-29, 2008 from 5:00-9:00 pm. Dinner will be served family-style, all-you-care-to-eat, and will feature turkey breast, carved beef, pork loin, mashed potatoes and other side dishes. Dinner will be $29.99 per adults and $15.99 per child ages 3-9, not including tax or gratuity. Guests using the Dining Plan can use one table service credit for this meal.>

Beginning "sometime" in 2009, Verizon Wireless customers at Walt Disney World and Disneyland will have the ability to use their phones to get access to show times, character appearances, check attraction wait times, and more while in the parks. Guests with other wireless providers will still have the ability to access a more limited menu of options as well.

Disney Cruise Line has announced that they are adding Disney Digital 3-D technology to both the Walt Disney Theatre and the Buena Vista Theatre. These will be the first 3-D theaters at sea! Cruisers onboard the Disney Wonder on November 20 will have the chance to go to a special midnight showing of "Bolt," Disney's newest feature film. Keep an eye out for characters from Bolt doing meet and greets outside the theatre!

Disney Tips:
From Fellow Readers

Our readers deliver a wealth of information! Here are the winners in this month's tip contest:

SET ASIDE SAVINGS
"My friends and I are planning a trip to Walt Disney World in the summer- and cash is a bit tight, as always. We scrimp and save, but want to have at least one nice dinner at our favorite buffet, Cape May Cafe. So to help cover costs, we've been setting aside the money from recycling cans and bottles at our house in an envelope each month or so. It's only been a couple of months, and we've already got over $20! By the time August rolls around, we'll be able to cover most of dinner costs and be able to relax at a restaurant that would normally be a bit too pricey for us. My suggestion to anyone is to start early, and keep it a small amount. The little bits add up, and you get to watch it grow over time. I know we are going to enjoy that dinner even more since we will have saved so long to get there!"
-- contributed by Courtney M.

SHOE-WER CAP?
"I hoard all of the small shampoos/conditioners, etc that I come across in my travels. One tip I would like to share is that I use the shower caps from my various trips to cover a pair of shoes when putting them in my luggage. They keep the rest of my clothing clean and can be reused many, many times. I store them in my luggage and they are always there when I take out my suitcase."
-- contributed by Phyllis H.

DISNEYLAND - DO IT!
"Being Walt Disney World veterans, I was concerned about my first trip to Disneyland. I was unsure how it would "compare;" and could it measure up to it's younger but much larger sibling? My fears were quickly put to rest upon stepping foot into Disneyland. It felt completely magical, very special, and a bit more intimate than Walt Disney World. I absolutely loved the theming, the landscaping, and the overall feel of the park. For those that are hesitant about visiting Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, don't be! My only regret is not visiting sooner!"

Captain's Corner:
Treasure Hunting Game

Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, "PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World." The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this "treasure" at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin. (Please note: Players can win once every 3 months.)

Here is this week's journal entry:

"My lady love Leota is upset with me. She thinks I stood her up. She refuses to talk to me at all. Her only communication was to send me this photo of Pluto's doghouse in my mail. What do I do? Is this some sort of strange way of telling me to meet her at this doghouse? If so, I can't quite remember where it is ... oh dear."

(click the image above to see a larger version)

Where in Walt Disney World is the doghouse pictured in the photo above?

For bonus credit, locate the photographic evidence in the PassPorter Photo Archive and post a comment with the photo!

Congratulations to Mary A. who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! Mary was the first person to identify the writing on A6 on the giant Tomorrowland View-Master Reel at Toy Story Mania as  "Giant's Eye Studies Visitors." Bonus credit also goes to Mary as the first person to locate the photo in our PassPorter Photo Archive. To view the original clue, see last week's newsletter.

Send your full answer to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in a future newsletter, along with the correct answer!

If you enjoy treasure hunts, we've got an entire book with over 100 distinct treasure hunts and over 1500 questions, complete with clues and contributions from Captain Jack Skatt. Get more details on 'PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World' book at http://www.passporterstore.com.

Q and A: With Jennifer and Dave

Chuckles asks: "I am looking into a possible Disney Cruise over New Year's. My husband and I are not 'party people.' Does anyone know if they offer any 'milder' New Year's Eve celebrations on the ship? Also, if we want to go to bed shortly after midnight, will it be really loud with all the partying, etc.?"

Dave answers: "The loudest party will be up on Deck 9 & 10 (outdoors), and there will be partying in the adult entertainment district on Deck 3 forward. Essentially, unless you're on Deck 8 (the 'suite' deck) or Deck 2 forward (under the entertainment district), you're not likely to hear a thing. It's also unlikely the partying will last long into the night. Disney Cruise Line generally doesn't attract the hard-partying crowd."

      Travel Feature:

    Hershey Park

by Mary Kraemer, PassPorter Guest Contributor

In 1903, Milton Hershey established a chocolate factory in the rolling green hills of Derry Church, Pennsylvania. In 1907, Hersheypark opened as a leisure park for Hershey employees.

The park eventually opened to the public and has expanded considerably. Today the park spreads over 110 acres and features more than 60 rides and attractions. It consistently provides a wholesome atmosphere for families and offers attractions geared toward pleasing every member of the family. It is clean, well maintained, and without exception, every employee I met on a recent visit was extraordinarily pleasant. To reinforce wholesome standards, even the park brochure politely details what kinds of clothing are not considered appropriate, which even includes "some language, gestures, and suggestive art" and the park "reserves the right to address these issues with all guests."

After parking in one of the large lots and riding a tram to the entrance, visitors have the choice of going directly to the park or visiting Hershey's Chocolate World, which is located just outside the main gate. Hershey's Chocolate World features a ride that gives visitors a glimpse into the chocolate-making process that has made Hershey so famous in America. The ride is entertaining, featuring a trio of singing cows, and at the end, visitors are rewarded with a free chocolate! Of course, Hershey's Chocolate World is also very possibly the largest emporium of all things Hershey in the universe.

One especially nice feature of Hersheypark is its system of measuring kids and issuing height-related wristbands. Their ride-height requirements use a "candy system" of different Hershey products and are set up in 6-inch increments. The gentlest rides are reserved for the Assorted Miniatures (up to 36 inches), then come Kisses (36-42 inches), Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (42-48 inches), Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bars (48-54 inches), Twizzlers (54-60 inches), and Jolly Rancher (over 60 inches). As a reward for being measured, kids also receive a free candy that corresponds to their height. The candy logos and images are found at ride entrances, and it's an easy system for kids to understand. Measuring kids once in the day is efficient, and ride operators only have to check wristbands rather than measure kids.

Inside the park, there is a paradise of rides just for little kids, and some of these rides have height restrictions that limit how tall riders can be! Hersheypark offers nearly two dozen charming rides specifically for younger guests, and some of them, like the Mini Pirate, are scaled-down versions of other park rides. These kiddie rides are gentle and creatively presented, with names such as the Bizzy Bees, the Balloon Flite, or the Dinosaur-Go-Round. For families with young children, Hersheypark delivers wonderful options for rides.

But Hersheypark aims to keep every member of the family happy, and on the other end of the spectrum, there are nearly a dozen coasters to make thrill seekers very satisfied. From the classic Trailblazer--a fairly standard steel coaster--to the Lightning Racer--a double-track wooden coaster that sends two trains simultaneously to race one another--to the first steel looping coaster on the East Coast, the SuperDooperLooper, Hersheypark has been building rides bigger, better, and faster over the years. The park's newest coaster, Fahrenheit, made my youngest daughter delighted to be a Twizzler (and made me feel just fine about watching her ride from a nearby bench!). This imposing coaster has a 90-degree vertical ascent right before its 97-degree negative drop, followed by some inverted loops, corkscrews, s-rolls, and high-speed curves. No wonder it's considered an 'aggressive' thrill ride!

Summers in Pennsylvania can be hot and humid. Well, Hersheypark has the answer for you with a large water park area called The Boardwalk. Going to the Boardwalk is nearly like going to a separate park within Hersheypark because guests in the Boardwalk area must wear swimsuits--not any street clothes or cutoffs--and the swim wear is not allowed in the rest of the park unless it is covered with street clothes.

We thought that the highlight of the Boardwalk area was the East Coast Waterworks, which is the largest water-play structure in the world. It is amazingly large and complex, with multiple slides (some of them several stories tall), hundreds of interactive water toys, pull ropes, tip cones, and two enormous buckets that dump a lot of water at once! My kids and I had to pick a meeting place because we constantly lost one another in this huge watery labyrinth. It was gloriously fun. If these waterworks are too overwhelming for little ones, there's the Bayside Pier area and Sandcastle Cove, which provide a much gentler water experience with zero-entry pools, bubbling fountains, small slides, water cannons, and jets.

The Boardwalk area also includes a set of four impressive water slides that start from 50 feet in the air, and a surfing "competition" ride. Then, if you think a water park is good, coasters are good, and a combination of the two must be awesome, there's The Roller Soaker, which lets riders dump water onto spectators but gives spectators the chance to even the score with sprayers to soak the riders.

Hersheypark is adjacent to ZooAmerica, and admission to the zoo in included in Hersheypark admission. (You can, however, visit ZooAmerica separately, without Hersheypark admission.) The town of Hershey has had a zoo nearly as long as it's had an amusement park, but it has changed over the years. The present zoo exhibits animals that are native to North America. The animal habitats are set up in sections that relate to their homelands: grassy waters (Everglades), north woods (evergreen forests), cactus community (Sonoran desert), big sky country (Midwestern prairies), and eastern woodlands.

The fun does not stop when summer ends, however. Hersheypark offers seasonal special events at Halloween and Christmas. Hersheypark in the Dark has special trick or treating for kids (and considering the sponsor, it's a pretty safe bet there will be loads of candy), rides, special shows, and entertainment, as well as admission to Creatures of the Night at ZooAmerica. At Christmas, Hersheypark is bedecked in twinkling lights, festive decorations, and visitors can enjoy rides and visit with Santa and his reindeer as well as see cheery holiday shows.

If you have time after experiencing everything that Hersheypark has to offer, take a drive through the main part of town. A unique feature of Hershey, Pennsylvania is the streetlights, which are topped with gigantic Hershey Kisses (wrapped and unwrapped)! Perhaps you could consider a stay at the Hotel Hershey, with its fabled Chocolate Spa, where the pampering includes chocolate in new and interesting ways!

    Dining Review: Beaches & Cream

by Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist

Let's be honest -- we all know that there's much more to Disney dining than just burgers and fries, but it's sometimes that's exactly what you want. And when you do, there's a perfect place to head for. It's not in any of the parks, but it is within walking distance of Epcot and a quick boat ride away from Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Beaches and Cream is a 1950s style ice cream parlour located at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club resort. It's not the easiest of places to find and perhaps that's just as well, as it's a fairly small place and exceptionally popular, meaning it's often packed, with long waits to get in.

From the Beach Club lobby, walk past Cape May Cafe and keep following the corridor, past Martha's Vineyard and Ariel's and you'll come to doors leading outside. Just a few steps further on to your right is Beaches and Cream. It's a similar story from the Yacht Club lobby. Head towards the Captain's Grille and keep going past the Yachtsman Steakhouse and follow the corridor. Beaches and Cream is on your left, just past Periwig's Beauty and Barber Shop and the arcade.

Now that you've found it, your next challenge may be getting a table. We find the best tactic is to arrive at more unusual times - perhaps 11am, when it opens for an early lunch or mid afternoon in between the lunch and dinner rush. Another good time to visit is late at night, as Beaches and Cream is open until 11pm daily. Beware though of the rush after IllumiNations finishes, as many people tend to head straight there once Epcot closes for the night.

If there are no openings when you get there, you'll be given a pager and usually some idea of how long the wait will be. One way to speed up the process is to explain that you'll happily take a seat at the counter, as there are bar stools all around the cooking area. We've done this on plenty of occasions and its great fun to watch the chefs and servers at work and you can often strike up a good conversation with them.

So what's so special about Beaches and Cream? The second you walk in, you'll feel as if you've stepped back in time, with a jukebox in the corner and colorful booths to sit in. I can't help but think of Grease every time I see this place -- Danny, Sandy, and their Rydell High classmates would be completely at home here. But theming is only half the story. The other half is the superb food here.

It's rare to find what is essentially a burger bar that caters so well to both vegetarians and meat eaters. All too often when we go to a burger place, there are plenty of choices for my husband, but if I'm lucky, I might find a spicy bean burger on the menu -- not something that usually inspires. Beaches and Cream is very different. A veggie burger is featured and more than that, it's the best veggie burger I've ever tasted in all my many years of not eating meat. Unlike many veggie burgers, the ones here are never dry and tasteless -- quite the opposite. The first time we ate here, I actually had to double check with our server than she hadn't got our orders mixed up, as mine was so good, I suddenly had a thought that maybe it was meat!

The feedback I get from my carnivorous husband is that the burgers are just as good. There are certainly never any complaints and the plate is always cleaned remarkably quickly, which can only be a positive sign.

However, let's be clear, the real reason you come to Beaches and Cream isn't for the burgers, no matter how good they are. The strongest attraction here is their mouth-watering selection of ice cream sundaes, so be sure to leave room to sample one! In fact, sometimes I have been known to ensure I do have room for a sundae by simply forgetting any of the other courses and just ordering dessert! Chocoholics and ice cream lovers will not be disappointed here.

If you haven't left much room, then you just go for individual or double scoops of ice cream. Sundaes give you the chance to add whipped cream, toasted almond and a cherry, with a choice of extra toppings for a small charge, including things like strawberry, pineapple, hot fudge, marshmallows and even peanut butter.

It's a fair bet that most of those items find their way into the Kitchen Sink -- an appropriate name for the ultimate sinful dessert, as it really does contain everything INCLUDING a miniature Kitchen Sink that the dessert is served in. We've had the pleasure of watching them construct this monstrosity when sitting at the counter (another good reason to get a seat there!) and it takes a whole can of whipped cream, three bananas, endless scoops of ice cream and just about every other sweet item in the kitchen that you can imagine. If you order this, be sure that you've not eaten anything else all day - and be sure to have a few friends around to help you out with it! We've yet to see one finished in its entirety, despite there often being up to eight people to dig into one. Other dessert favorites include the classic banana split, milkshakes and malts, a Coke or Root Beer float and there are also some devilishly bad-for-you sundaes. My favorite has to be the Fudge Mud Slide, featuring a brownie, hot fudge and lots of vanilla ice cream, although a number of my friends have tried to persuade me that the No Way Jose with its peanut butter, hot fudge, and vanilla ice cream is superior. I am yet to be convinced.

Perhaps best of all are the prices here. You can easily enjoy a really good -- and exceptionally filling -- meal here for less than $30 each, with burgers priced between $7.99 to $11.49 and desserts between $2.69 and $7.99, although the Kitchen Sink will set you back $21.99.

With everything on offer, perhaps it's just as well that the parks are a walk away, as it gives you a chance to work off some of those calories you've just piled on here! It's worth discovering and I'm willing to bet you'll be just like us and returning as often as you can.
