Disney Tips:
From Fellow Readers

Our readers deliver a wealth of information!
Here are the winners in this month's tip contest:

A DIFFERENT KIND OF  GENIE
"When taking a Disney Cruise with infants/toddlers in diapers, request a Diaper Genie for your room from your cabin steward. They are free of charge and make the room a nicer place for all involved!"
-- contributed by Renee L.

TEA TIPS
"Calling all UK tea drinkers (specifically hot tea). Disney resorts (and many other hotels) provide coffee making facilities with coffee provided. However if you are like my husband who does not drink coffee but loves a cuppa first thing in the morning, either pack tea-bags (this the better option if you do not have a car) or remember to pick some up in a local supermarket. The closest equivalent is English breakfast or Irish to our standard PG Tips/Tetley brands. I found that the on site resort shops did not stock this type of tea. Milk is available at the food court. Then all you need to do is fill up the water section of the coffee maker in your room then pop a teabag in the carafe and let the water run through."
-- contributed by Alison H.

FIREWORKS AT FORT WILDERNESS
"If it is being offered during your stay, definitely take the fireworks wagon ride at Fort Wilderness. It leaves at 9:00 pm and you board right across from the Hoop Dee Doo Revue. We had reservations for the 7:00 pm Hoop-Dee-Doo show and went right out and climbed on board. You ride around the resort and then once you get to Bay Lake, you stop for the fireworks. It was perfectly timed because once we got there, we had 2-3 minutes to admire the quiet beauty of the stars over the lake. Then the show starts and the music is piped into the wagon so you can hear with crystal clarity everything that's being said. You get a great unobstructed view with no crowds or jostling for position. My 11-year-old enjoyed it so much, she wanted to do it every night. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids ages 3-9 (everyone under 3 is free). "

Captain's Corner:
Treasure Hunting Game

Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, "PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World."

The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this "treasure" at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin or PassPorter name badge pin.

Here is this week's journal entry:

"Now that Halloween is over and I have no need for this Mickey-shaped pumpkin, I'm going to chop it up and make my famous pumpkin pie! My pumpkin pie is to die for ... to which this poor pumpkin will attest. But in honor of this pumpkin's sacrifice, I've decided to enter my pie in the Toontown Fair. I'll just pop over there tomorrow and sign up ... I happen to know the receptionist!"

Who is the receptionist in the Toontown Judges Tent in Mickey's Toontown Fair? For bonus points, locate the photographic evidence in the PassPorter Photo Archive and post a comment with the photo!

Send your full answer to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in the next newsletter, along with the correct answer!

Congratulations to Christy Vermillion who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! Christy was the first person to identify the location of the Mickey-shaped pumpkins as being in the Living With The Land attraction at Epcot as well as in the backyard of Mickey's House in Toontown at the Magic Kingdom. To view the original clue, see last week's newsletter.

If you enjoy treasure hunts, we've got an entire book with over 100 distinct treasure hunts and over 1500 questions, complete with clues and contributions from Captain Jack Skatt. Get more details on "PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World" book at http://www.passporterstore.com.

Q & A:
With Jennifer and Dave

Gonnabe007 asks: "
I am trying to figure out how much time to plan for bus travel to each park each day. we are staying at the Carribean Beach Resort. I really need to know travel times for so I know what time to catch the bus from our meals."

Dave and Jennifer answer: "
As it happens, we've timed how long it takes to go from each Disney resort to each Disney park and we put it our PassPorter Walt Disney World guidebook. The Caribbean Beach times are on page 48 and are as follows:

Magic Kingdom - 20 minutes
Epcot - 15 minutes
Studios - 12 minutes
Animal Kingdom - 20 minutes
Downtown Disney - 25 minutes"

Hi, {{user("firstname")}}!

First, we have a small correction to make: we have two PassPorter specials going on right now -- one is free Media Mail shipping in the PassPorter Store until Nov. 5. The other special is 40-50% off orders of 3 or more PassHolder Pouches. These specials appeared in today's issue of EARS THE DEAL (a special bulletin from AllEarsNet), but we incorrectly stated that orders would only be accepted on the phone -- it should have said that orders would only be accepted ONLINE. We'll take them both ways, however. Sorry for the goof!

Our city just completed the first (of two) autumn leaf pickups of the season, the neighborhood squirrels have been happily gnawing away on the Halloween pumpkin on our front porch, we actually have some leftover treats from last night's trick-or-treat blitz (and not a strand of toilet paper in sight - such a well-behaved neighborhood!)! It's now officially okay, according to "Jennifer's Holiday Decorating Rules," to start putting up holiday lights. Let the holiday decorating begin!

Decorations here in our office consist of the many items for MouseFest 2007 which are arriving daily -- nine cases of printed Pocket Guides to MouseFest, oodles of cloisonne pins, lanyards, ID badges, luggage tags, and so on. So much remains for we event organizers to do, and barely a month in which to do it! If you haven't yet registered for MouseFest, hurry over to http://www.mousefest.org -- the official registration cut-off date is today! If you miss it, we will accept late registrations for as long as possible (or as long as our supplies hold out) -- check the web site for details on acceptance of late registrations.

Meantime, the cargo ship bearing PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2008 from Hong Kong arrives tomorrow in the Port of Los Angeles. The books are getting so close we (and many of you) can nearly smell them (remember the distinctive smell of brand new school textbooks?)! Get your pre-orders in now for the earliest delivery!

The response to last week's announcement about our popular PassPorter Photo Archive and our acceptance of quality submissions from PassPorter members/readers has been overwhelming! We are very happy to announce that our Photo Archive has now doubled in size thanks to all the excellent contributions! Here are our top six contributing photographers in the archive:

Replacing The Magic: What To Do If You Lose Your Park Passes
by Kara Monroe, PassPorter Guest Contributor

My last visit to Walt Disney World was in January of 2006 as a part of a Disney Land and Sea package. I was traveling with my best friend for a "girl's week" of fun and relaxation in the sun. The trip was a special treat for me as it was the first time I ever stayed on property. The trip was great, but I seemed to have a problem holding on to my Key To The World Card both on the trip and, I recently realized, after I got home. When I moved recently, I found I had lost my Key To The World Card which still had five days of park visits to be used. I have ticket media dating back to my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was in 7th grade (more than 20 years ago). But for some reason, this one seemed destined to be lost.

While at the Magic Kingdom, I had my Key to the World card in a FASTPASS pouch, hooked to a lanyard. All were Disney purchased products so no low quality knockoffs here. Apparently the FASTPASS pouch couldn't hold up to the speed of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Sometime during our three trips on the ride the FASTPASS pouch containing my Key To The World card went flying off of me. I didn't realize it when we exited the attraction. However, when we got to Pirates of the Caribbean I realized my Key To The World card was no longer with me. Luckily my best friend took over as I was in a, let's say mild, state of panic. We went back to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and talked with several helpful cast members. Thankfully another guest had found my card and returned it to the cast members working the ride. They had been in the process of contacting Guest Services to try to return the card to me.

During the Sea portion of our land and sea vacation, I mislaid my card in our stateroom and spent a panicky 30 or 40 minutes searching until it turned up. Again, I should have taken the time to take some basic precautions - which I'll share with you below. My bad luck continued when I returned home. The Key To The World card was mislaid in my house. When I recently moved and discovered the card wasn't with my other ticket media, I took some action. I'm pleased to say that just a few days ago; a bright, shiny Fed Ex package was waiting in my door at home when I returned from work. Disney restored my unused park days on a new piece of ticket media.

Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and follow this simple advice. Disney's official position is that they are not responsible for lost or damaged ticket media. However, at every single turn Disney Cast Members were very helpful. In the end they made sure I didn't lose a second of magical time in the parks. Here are some tips I learned from my experience.

    1. Don't lose your Key To The World card/ticket media. Obviously, the best thing to do is not to lose your ticket media. The Key To The World card is like a credit card and your ticket media represents a sizable investment. Both should be protected like your cash and credit cards. Use a wallet or travel purse to keep them safe. Don't let them dangle off of you in a FASTPASS pouch which isn't designed to hold important items like that. Key To The World cards and ticket media belong in the same secure place you keep your credit cards, cash, and passport.

[Jennifer's Note: The PassPorter PassHolder Pouch is designed just for this -- I haven't lost a pass since I began putting them in this pouch.]

    2. Write down the number. My story has a happy ending -- and that is that my best friend still had the number from the front of her Key To The World card (it's on the back of other ticket media). Disney was able to find my card from her number. From now on, I'll write down the number of my card and/or ticket media in a safe place (right inside my PassPorter!). That way if something happens to the while I'm on vacation I can go immediately to guest services with the information they need to look up the ticket.

[Jennifer's Note: PassPorter readers also suggest you photocopy the front and back of your pass and tuck one copy in a PassPocket of your PassPorter and another copy in your suitcase for safekeeping.]

    3. If you lose your ticket media go immediately to Guest Services. If you lose your ticket media while you're on vacation, go immediately to a Guest Services booth (in a park, at your resort, or in Downtown Disney). They will need photo ID and the number from the back of the card. From all the cast members I talked with during my search, chances are they will be more than happy to help you. Officially, Walt Disney World is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged ticket media but they do have the ability to look up ticket media and determine if you still have days/options remaining. The number on the ticket media is the easiest way for them to look up your record. If you don't have the number, a reservation number may also be used to look up the record if you're staying on property.

    4. If you realize your loss later on, email Ticket Inquiries or fax your request. After several phone calls, I was asked to email what information I had to WDW.Ticket.inquiries@disneyworld.com. They replied within 24 hours and asked that I fax my request along with my name, address, and daytime phone number to 407-566-4685. I sent my friend's ticket number, my name, the date of my trip, and our original reservation number. Less than a week later I had replacement ticket media in my hands.

It has been more than a year since the trip so I thought I had no hope of getting that ticket media replaced. However, as always Disney came through with a little extra magic. I was already a loyal Disney fan, but replacing my lost ticket media is just another reason I will choose Disney over other vacation options.

Walt Disney World At The Holidays: Tips for Surviving The Busy Season
by Ann Weber, PassPorter Guest Contributor

Although we had been to Walt Disney World several times, last year was our first experience going at what is probably the busiest season for the World. I spent a lot of time researching in preparation for our trip. After our trip, I realized that even with all of the knowledge I had gained beforehand, I learned even more lessons while there. I want to share with you some of what I learned so that you can have the most magical holiday possible at Walt Disney World.

The first and most important tip is to plan early. Hotels, airlines, and Disney's Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) fill early at this busy time of year. We were able to get a very good price on airfare almost 12 months out, so we purchased it. I kept watching as time passed, and the rates only went up. This won't always be true, but frequently it was.

The next tip is equally important -- be flexible. For example, because we made most of our ADRs on the day the reservation window opened (180 days in advance of our trip), we were able to originally get all of the ones we wanted. However our flight times changed at least four times over the course of that year and we found that once we arrived at Walt Disney World, some of our ADRs no longer fit in our plans. So we canceled them and tried to get new ones, but it can be difficult to obtain ADRs on short notice. If you are planning a trip on shorter notice, try some of the less well known locations. At the resort restaurants, we saw several people walk up without ADRs and be seated within a reasonable amount of time. On New Years Eve, we decided we wanted lunch earlier than planned so we could go to the Animal Kingdom to see the special Christmas Parade (a very fun parade!) and do a few things before that park closed. We called the dining reservation number to change our ADR and we were told that Whispering Canyon Cafe, where we had our original ADR, was completely booked for the entire day. This was not surprising for New Year's Eve. We decided to go early and see if we could get in. We were seated in only 10 minutes (almost an hour before our original ADR). The Trails End Buffet at Fort Wilderness is also a less crowded location with good food and a relaxing atmosphere.

At this busy time of year, I recommend staying on Disney property. When the parks start to fill to capacity, you are guaranteed to get into a park every day. You are not guaranteed that you can get into a specific park (for example the Magic Kingdom may be full but you can still get into Epcot), so remember -- flexibility is key! Additionally, by staying on site, you can choose between a variety of transportation options that best fit your plans.

Go to the parks very early. We found we were able to see most of what we wanted to see each day before the crowds became too overwhelming. On the 29th, we were planning to have a late breakfast at the Grand Floridian and then head into the Magic Kingdom to watch our daughter march down Main Street USA with her high school band. We changed our plans (again, flexibility) and went to the park bright and early since we talked to people who had been turned away the previous day from both the Magic Kingdom as well as Animal Kingdom because the parks had hit capacity. Luckily, by the time they started turning people away, we were already in our park of choice.

Remember, FASTPASS is your friend. FASTPASS is available to everyone, not just Walt Disney World resort guests so take advantage whenever possible. FASTPASS rules and tips change from year to year, so make sure you check the most recent edition of PassPorter and/or visit http://www.allearsnet.com/tp/fastpass.htm before heading out to get the latest tips.

Leave the parks whenever the crowds start to frustrate you. There are many things to do outside of the parks. Take the time to go and see the decorations at some of the resorts. We went to the Yacht and Beach Club, the Grand Floridian, the Wilderness Lodge, and Fort Wilderness. The decorations were amazing at all of these. Don't make my mistake -- remember your camera! Some of the resorts with water have small boats that you can rent and go out on the lagoon. There are several miniature golf courses, and much more. We enjoyed spending time relaxing at our Fort Wilderness cabin. The cabin had two TVs, so everyone did not have to agree on what to watch.

If Disney offers a test run of their New Year's Eve festivities on December 30th, take advantage of this. We do not like crowds, so we decided we would celebrate the New Year in our cabin and get an early start on January 1st to enjoy the parks while everyone else recovered from their late night for New Year's Eve. We noticed that Magic Kingdom was having their Super New Years Eve fireworks at midnight on the 30th. They were also having two SpectroMagic parades that evening, and the park was open until 3am. Our goal for the evening was to see the parade and the fireworks. Any rides that we took were bonuses. Some of the popular rides still had some significant waits, but we were able to find plenty to do for our evening. In addition to the special fireworks, some of the outdoor dances, etc. were also running in a practice mode for the next evening. It was fun dancing to the Cha Cha Slide as we were walking (dancing) from Tomorrowland to Frontierland to get ready for SpectroMagic. While we waited in line to watch the parade, my son went into Diamond Horseshoe Saloon where they were teaching line dancing and had a great time doing some old dances and learning some new ones. It was very easy to find a good spot for the parade. Even people coming at the last minute were able to see. After the parade, we decided we would head to Tomorrowland. Due to an unexpected breakdown of Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin while we were on it, we were running through Tomorrowland trying to get to the Castle area when the music started for the fireworks. We decided to stop in the middle of Tomorrowland and wait to see where would be the best place to go for the fireworks. We were happy and amazed to see the fireworks were everywhere and you really could be just about anywhere in the park and have a great view of at least one set of fireworks.

So, if you are planning on Christmas at Walt Disney World, plan, stay flexible, and have a very magical and happy holiday.
