Disney Tips:
From Fellow Readers

Our readers deliver a wealth of information! Here are the winners in this month's tip contest:

WONDERFUL WATER
"If your children do not like to drink water or dislike the taste of water other than their own from home (our water is filtered and they say other water tastes like it's from a garden hose!), take your own single serving drink mix packets. They are about the size of a sweetener packet and fit easily in a purse or back pack. It is also economical, because you can bring your own water bottle with you and keep refilling through out the day. Make sure you bring different flavors to give them a choice. It also helps keep them hydrated in the hot Florida sun!"
-- contributed by Ida S.

SHOE BOX, SOUVENIR BOX
"Whenever I go on trips, I always pack a small shoe box size plastic container in my suitcase or carry on. I use it to keep small items together on my way to my destination and on the way back it's usually used to protect any souvenirs from being crushed or damaged. It really works well!"
-- contributed by Sharon S.

MAKING MAGIC FOR OTHERS
"I made a solo trip to Walt Disney World with the intent of making some magic every day I was touring the parks. On the first day, while coming off Expedition Everest, I got a Dream Fast Pass. I ran the queue to the single rider line again and was placed in the front car with a lovely lady celebrating her 70th birthday with her first ever trip to Walt Disney World! Her family would not ride with her, neither kids nor grandkids! We had a wonderful ride, just like two kids again! When it came time to unload, I gave her my (unused) Dream FASTPASS and wished her a happy birthday! The next day I was able to put a very disappointed 10 year-old into my perfect viewing spot for the opening ceremonies of the Magic Kingdom. The third day I gave away my FASTPASS on Soarin' to a young woman whose party (who didn't want to ride) didn't want to wait for her to go through the standby line. Later, at the Yorkshire Fish 'n Chips seating, I invited a family of four to sit with me for lunch (I was sitting alone and there were no tables available). On my last and final day I gave up my front seat in Rock 'n' Roller Coaster to a very happy young man! Yes, magic is alive and well as long as you make it!"

Captain's Corner:
Treasure Hunting Game

Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, "PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World." The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this "treasure" at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin. (Please note: Players can win once every 3 months.)

Here is this week's journal entry:

"Halloween approaches and I'm drawn to the Haunted Mansion where my beloved Leota 'hangs out.' I went to visit her today and was utterly shocked to see a gravestone for her near the mansion. It can't be ... could my Leota be gone? I was so distraught I forgot what her tombstone said. Perhaps it holds some words of comfort for me."

What is written on Madam Leota's tombstone at the Haunted Mansion?

For bonus credit, locate the photographic evidence in the PassPorter Photo Archive and post a comment with the photo!

Congratulations to Liz C. who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! Liz was the first person to identify the rest of the writing on the Liberty Square plaque as "tradesmen leave the safety of their homes to become heroes. Welcome to Liberty Square!" Bonus credit also goes to Liz who was the first person to locate the photo in our PassPorter Photo Archive. To view the original clue, see last week's newsletter.

Send your full answer to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in a future newsletter, along with the correct answer!

If you enjoy treasure hunts, we've got an entire book with over 100 distinct treasure hunts and over 1500 questions, complete with clues and contributions from Captain Jack Skatt. Get more details on 'PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World' book at http://www.passporterstore.com.

Q and A: With Jennifer and Dave

4Disney2 asks:
"If you bring your laptop on a cruise, do you have to lock up your laptop when leaving the stateroom? Does it have to be secured with a cable?"

Dave answers: "If you feel the need, use the safe (if your laptop will fit), or just stow it out of sight. There are few places to fasten a cable, so I wouldn't bother with that.

You have the same stateroom host/hostess for the entire cruise, so we never worry about things like laptops, cameras, etc. In a situation where everybody knows who has access to the room (pass key cards are individually coded, and room access is recorded), theft by crew members is nearly unheard of. Ships are closed societies surrounded by very large moats, and the crew members have a whole lot more to lose than any laptop is worth.

Huge, blue diamond pendants and the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio would be another matter."

2009 Edition Arrival Status: The shipping container full of PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009 books is getting so close to the Detroit rail yard, we can almost hear those steel rails hummin'. If all continues to go well, we expect to have the books in our warehouse next week (perhaps around Election Day, Tuesday, November 4), and start shipping pre-orders of PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009 the next day.

As always, we put top priority on delivering pre-orders to folks who will be traveling soon. If you supplied your travel date to us when you placed your order (or contact us now via e-mail to orders@passporter.com or by toll-free phone - 877-929-3273 Mon-Fri, 9:00 am-6:00 pm ET), we'll take that into account. If the delay means we missed your departure date, we'll be in touch to determine your desires (refund, "ship anyway," etc.), and for those whose travel dates are imminent we'll adjust shipping methods at our cost, to ensure the books arrive in time.

PassPorter's Decade of Dreams Tour is going to Disneyland for the Backstage Magic Adventures by Disney on October 13-18, 2009!       Travel Feature:

    Port Canaveral, Florida

by Sue Kulick, PassPorter Featured Columnist

Thinking about taking a cruise out of Port Canaveral? It's a wonderful port, but even better than that, it's a great place to spend some time!

Less than an hour from Orlando International Airport, this area has a little something for everyone. First off, you will need a place to stay. The area has plenty of resorts to choose from, from a Motel 6 all the way up to beach front condos. We personally prefer the The Radisson at Port Canaveral but there are many other choices. Some of our readers have had great experiences at The Country Inn Suites and the Residence Inn. The Radisson offers packages that include a complimentary full breakfast, as well as cruise parking and shuttle service. We also love the funky beach theme, and the Sleep Number beds!

Once you've decided where to stay, it's time to decide what to see! You can start your experience by checking out this website: Port Canaveral

Spend some time outdoors, enjoying the Florida weather. You can visit the beach at beautiful Jetty Park (visit http://www.portcanaveral.orghere to see a copy of the Jetty Park brochure), where you can swim, fish, camp and relax. A short distance away, Cocoa Beach has several oceanfront beaches to choose from. Try Alan Shephard Park, a 2 acre county park with beautiful vistas, plenty of parking and all the relaxation you need.

Think you might like something a bit more adventurous? You can go fishing! There are plenty of piers in the area, including a popular one at Jetty Park, or you can charter a boat. This website gives you all the information you need to charter a boat that suits your needs: Fish with the Best!

Maybe, you would like to get back to nature. This area of Florida offers one of nature's most beautiful wildlife refuges, . This area, open to the public and located on the grounds of Kennedy Space Center, offers visitors walking trails, wildlife drives and observations platforms. You can spot a manatee, or maybe see a nest of bald eagles. The visitor's center is open daily, and sometimes the center holds special events such as bird walks and wildlife festivals. For some truly stunning pictures of the refuge, check out Merritt Island Wildlife Association (click on the "Wildlife Photography" link) and enjoy!

Of course, not all of us are nature girls and boys, so how about some shopping? Let's begin with Cocoa Beach's most famous shop, RonJon's Surf Shop. Even if you don't surf, no trip to the Port Canaveral area is complete without a peak into this 52,000 square foot surfing Mecca! Maybe you forgot your sunscreen, or need a new pair of flip-flops. What a perfect excuse to go browse the king of all beach shops! For a truly unique experience, check out the Cocoa Beach Pier. And, if it's true diehard shopping you are after, there is the Merritt Square Mall!

One thing you cannot miss in any vacation to the Port Canaveral area is Kennedy Space Center. Kennedy Space Center and NASA work hard to keep state of the art space technology in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural resources. The result is an informative and exciting visitor's center that celebrates mankind's journey into space, while preserving the thousands of pristine acres that make up the complex. You can experience a simulated shuttle launch, see an IMAX movie or spend a quiet moment at the Astronaut's Memorial. There is so much to see and do here, plan on spending the whole day!

After a full day, you are hungry! And the Space Coast offers you plenty of choices. You have a lot of chains to choose from, but why not try something different and local? Our favorite is Grill's Seafood and Tiki Bar, a place right on the water. Dock your boat and come on in! Grill's has indoor and outdoor seating, and an outside deck with live entertainment. Fun and funky, the food is fresh and delicious.

A lot of times, vacationers think of the Port Canaveral area as nothing more than a place to rest their head the night before they set sail on their cruise. But Port Canaveral has so much to offer. Plan to spend a day, a weekend, or a week to enjoy this gem in the necklace of Florida's Space Coast.

Dashing Through The...Snow? Sleigh Rides at Walt Disney World

by Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist

There are few things that sum up the holiday season more than a sleigh ride. OK, so usually the idea of a sleigh ride is to be "dashing through the snow" to quote a famous song, but there's no reason why you have to have snow to enjoy a sleigh ride in the holiday season -- and Walt Disney World is proof of that.

Throughout the year, there are carriage rides running at the Disney's Fort Wilderness, Port Orleans, and Saratoga Springs resorts. They last around 25 minutes, cost $35, and are a great way to either explore the resort you're staying at or to visit one of these resorts and get a good idea of what it would be like to stay there.

What's less well known is that, during the holiday season, there are some changes and additions to the program to allow the introduction of sleigh rides. Wilderness Lodge, which doesn't usually offer carriage rides at other times of the year, suddenly acquires its own sleigh ride, almost as if by magic. Now, by sleigh ride, you first have to understand what it actually is, otherwise you could be in for a disappointment, as we were, the first time we took one of these.

Essentially this is a carriage ride, pulled by a beautiful horse, but dressed up with some holiday decorations and some sleigh bells. That was my first disappointment when we took this sleigh ride. The second disappointment was the route we took. Wilderness Lodge is somewhat in the middle of nowhere and let's be honest, that fits its Pacific Northwest-style theming. However, when it comes to sleigh rides, it's a bit of a problem.

The solution appeared to be to plot a route into the nearby woods, but that just didn't work for us. I personally like to see the sights whenever I go out on a ride and a sleigh ride is no exception, so I came away very disappointed by this. It's a shame, as the Wilderness Lodge is a perfect setting to do this, but I think I very naively thought that perhaps -- and I don't know how I thought they could logistically do this -- there would be more to see of the resort, but sadly there isn't.

Fast forward a couple of years and it was time to give the sleigh ride another chance, but this time, we opted to try out the one over at Fort Wilderness. I'd heard so many great things about all the Christmas decorations there and figured that should mean there would be more to see on this tour. Fortunately, I was right.

You meet your carriage for your sleigh ride by Pioneer Hall. I don't know about you, but Fort Wilderness strikes me as the type of resort you're unlikely to visit unless you're actually staying there or perhaps heading to one of their dinner shows. It's fairly remote and this was only our second or third visit there. Despite that, we found our pick-up point with no problem, thanks to some good information from the Cast Member when I booked it and some good signposting.

We were picked up at the appointed time and, after a quick stop for a drink for our horse, we were off. If there wasn't much to see on our sleigh ride at the Wilderness Lodge, it was the complete opposite here. We were given a choice of which route we wanted to take and my answer was immediate -- "whichever will allow us to see as many of the Christmas decorations as possible." Our driver was very knowledgeable and said she instantly knew of a few that shouldn't be missed -- and she knew what she was talking about.

I have never seen Christmas decorations like this before. Over here in the UK, we're a bit behind the States when it comes to decorating for the holidays. It's a trend that's taken off in recent years, with people putting up more lights and starting to buy in the large Christmas inflatables you see in most housing developments in America. However, having visited a few friends at Christmas time in various cities and towns, nothing could prepare us for what we were about to see.

We learned as we drove round that there's actually a competition at Fort Wilderness for the best campsite decorations and there's at least one couple who've been in the top three more than once in recent years. It quickly became clear that this resort is very much one that people return to year after year, with our driver explaining that many choose to head down here for the winter, arriving in October and leaving again in April or May the following year. Sounds like a perfect plan to me! That perhaps helps to explain why they invest so much time - and no doubt money as well -- into these decorations. We quickly lost count of the number of inflatable Mickeys, Minnies, Poohs and Eeyores that we saw as we drove along. Although it was impossible to get good photos, due to the motion of the sleigh ride, it's a memory that will stay with me for years to come. You really felt as if you'd been privileged and had just entered a huge family home with different relatives all showcasing their best efforts for Christmas.

All too soon, we were back at Pioneer Hall and our driver told us how much she loved working on the Fort Wilderness route. She also told us it's easy for her to get this route, as everyone heads over to the Wilderness Lodge sleigh ride come the holiday season, which seemed like a great shame to us. Our boat arrived to take us back to the Wilderness Lodge, where we would be dining later that night and, as we left, we saw one of the sleigh rides about to set off from the front of the resort. I couldn't help but wonder if they'd tried out the competition at Fort Wilderness and, if they did, whether they'd end up falling in love with both the wonderful atmosphere of the resort and the decorations as much as we did.

Although the carriage rides that take place throughout the year are fairly well advertised and are easily booked by calling 407-WDW-PLAY, Disney seems to keep the Christmas sleigh rides more of a secret. Reservations are now being taken for Wilderness Lodge sleigh rides up to 90 days in advance. They are available between November 30 and December 30, with each ride lasting 25 minutes and costing $60 for groups of up to four adults or three adults plus two children. Rides depart every half hour nightly between 5:30 pm and 9:30 pm, with rides between 3:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Christmas Eve. To book, call 407-WDW-PLAY and note that you can only pay by cash or room charge, as the sleigh drivers do not accept credit cards. You will need to guarantee your booking with a credit card and if you need to cancel, you'll have to do so 24 hours in advance to avoid paying the entire fee. It's worth booking sooner rather than later with the sleigh rides, as last year, I had three dates in mind and could only get one.
