Updates:
What's New and Changed

Here are a few items of relevant news:

Another of Disney's worst-kept secrets is now official. The long-awaited Tinker Bell character meet and greet at Magic Kingdom's Mickey's Toontown Fair will open October 24. "Pixie Hollow" will feature Tink and four fellow fairies from the new "Tinker Bell" direct-to-DVD animated feature. Park guests will be shrunk-down to pixie size to meet Tink and her pals, but Dr. Wayne Szalinski probably won't be involved.

Beginning March 1, 2009, the Magical Fireworks Voyage experience will be available to all guests, not only Grand Gathering guests, regardless of the size of their party. Booking details to come soon!

The Bocuse d'Or Gala Dinner, centerpiece of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, will now offer a new price for Annual Passholders or others who already have park admission. The price for these guests will be $325 plus tax and does not include park admission. To book this dinner, call 407-939-3378.

Pleasure Island is offering additional hours and shows this weekend on Friday and Saturday to accommodate the crowds arriving for the "last" weekend. The Adventurers Club will open at 6:00 pm both nights will extra Library shows. (Rumor has it that special holiday shows may be part of the rotation!) The Comedy Warehouse will open early with it's first show at 6:55 p.m. Friday night will have shows at 6:55, 8:00, 9:10, 10:25, 11:35 and 12:45. Saturday night's schedule will be 6:55, 8:00, 9:10, 10:25, 12:05 and 1:05. Bands will be performing each night on the Waterfront Stage.

Disney Tips:
From Fellow Readers

Our readers deliver a wealth of information! Here are the winners in this month's tip contest:

CHAFING CHALLENGES
"This tip isn't pretty, but it would have saved us a lot of time and money! With the heat you need to plan for the possibility of chafing. It wasn't something that I ever thought would happen to my kids but it did. The second day in my son complained that his leg hurt, it turns out with the extreme heat and the way his shorts hung his thighs were rubbing. He got really uncomfortable. There wasn't anywhere in Disney that we could find new underwear (boxer briefs instead of briefs) or any cornstarch, so after a $60 cab ride to Walmart we got new underwear and powder. I would highly recommend packing shorts that pull up enough to avoid thigh to thigh friction and pack some cornstarch just in case. The boxer briefs work great for boys."

NAME RECOGNITION
"A few years ago I made homemade autograph books for my daughters out of colored card stock and key rings. Since the books were identical, I made a cover page with my daughters' names on them so that I could keep track of them. Little did I know how special that simple thing would become. My daughters were 3 and 5 at the time and when they went to visit with Minnie Mouse, she noticed the names on their books. When she signed their autograph books she started the message with their name. For example one said 'Chelsea, You are so cute! Love, Minnie.' Well my girls could both recognize their own names so they were so excited that Minnie 'knew' their names without anyone telling her. When I asked my oldest daughter how she thought Minnie knew her name she said 'Oh because she remembers me from last year!' It was so cute! Many of the princesses even said things like 'Hello Taylor! It's lovely to see you today.' My girls never caught on to just how the characters knew their names. So be sure to display your child's name to the characters in some way and your child will never forget the day their favorite character 'recognized' them."

SUPER STICKERS
"On my last two trips to Walt Disney World I found a great way to share the magic and help a few children. I took along a small bag with Mickey and the gang stickers I'd bought at my local dollar store. At 100 stickers for a buck it was a real deal, but the smiles I got when I'd give one to a child was ten times the reward for me. I gave them to children who weren't having a good day and to those who were behaving very well. In other words, anyone I thought needed a sticker. Depending on the situation I'd offer them with words like, 'Can Mickey help dry your tears?' 'Maybe Goofy can take away the grump?' or 'How about a Minnie sticker for such a well behaved young lady?' The kids and parents were so thankful and I loved seeing the faces of the children when they received a tiny treat. I'll be the sticker lady on all of my upcoming trips."

Treasure Hunting Game

Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, "PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World." The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this "treasure" at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin. (Please note: Players can win once every 3 months.)

Here is this week's journal entry:

"I'm having a hoppin' good time at Disneyland in California! Today I made a great little find -- a little cemetery near the Haunted Mansion. Among the many tombstones, I was most interested in a stately one for 'Old Flybait.' Someone must have loved him very much ... I half wonder if it wasn't one of our famous princesses! Next time I see Snow White, I'll have to drop his name.

When and how did Old Flybait die?

Congratulations to Mary K. who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! Q and A: With Jennifer and Dave

purpleprincesskc asks:
"We are going to Walt Disney World for our honeymoon in January. Which moderate resort is the most romantic? We are thinking of Port Orleans French Quarter."

Dave answers: "Each of the moderates offers a different kind of romance, for different tastes. If you think Port Orleans French Quarter seems the most romantic, go for it! Of the moderate resorts, I happen to like the romance best at Port Orleans French Quarter and Port Orleans Riverside Alligator Bayou section, but each of us is different."

From the Authors: Cool Links and MouseFest Mania

Hi, {{user('firstname')}}!

We've been incredibly busy working on MouseFest this week, so most of this column will announced news regarding MouseFest. But one thing we want to bring to your attention is a new section of this newsletter called Cool Links, which you'll find in the left column below the tips. This new section highlights Disney- and travel-related products we've personally tried and recommend to you, so check it out!

Were you thinking of joining us this December 11th-15th at Walt Disney World and/or on the December 7th-11th Disney Wonder cruise for MouseFest? This 'grand gathering' of Disney online communities, podcasters, bloggers, webmasters, and authors has become a holiday season tradition for many of us, and keeps getting bigger and better every year! If you already have plans to be on the Disney Wonder and/or at Walt Disney World at the same time as MouseFest, definitely check it out. There are all sorts of free activities, and you'll be able to meet a whole lot of really great folks who share your passion for all things Disney.

The preliminary MouseFest schedule of events has just gone online over at MouseFest.org, and MouseFest attendee registration has been going strong. So far, nearly 400 people have registered, including many members of the PassPorter message board community. Many PassPorter message board Guides will also be on hand, and folks from PassPorter are organizing a bunch of great events to share with everyone who attends. Come on by MouseFest Corner at our message boards to see what your fellow 'PassPorters' are planning, and get a chance to get acquainted.

A brand new event has also just been added to the MouseFest line-up, in a brand-new location for MouseFest (although it's been around at Walt Disney World since the beginning). Registered attendees will be welcome at the MouseFest Kick-Off Reception, to be held at Disney's Contemporary Resort Convention Center (what a great chance to take a gander at the Contemporary's newly-announced Bay Lake Tower).

This announcement goes hand-in-hand with some slightly older news, that MouseFest's biggest event, the Mega Mouse Meet, will be held at Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Convention Center. We've also arranged a special lodging deal at Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Resort. Have we piqued your interest? Then pop over to the MouseFest.org web site, and read all about it. While you're there, please sign up for the MouseFest newsletter, so you can keep on top of all the MouseFest news.

While we're counting down the days 'til MouseFest, we're also anxiously awaiting the delivery of PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009, which will arrive in our warehouse in less than a month. Now is a really great time to place your pre-order, so you'll be among the first to receive the next edition of our guidebook (and have it in time for MouseFest, too)!

Our PassPorter's Disney Cruise Line guidebook received a great mention in a recent Sun Sentinel article about Disney cruises. You'll also find several quotes from Dave Marx in the article as well! Check it out at Sun Sentinel

    Adventures by Disney: Costa Rica

by Marley Braun, PassPorter Guest Contributor

If you are like me, you are the vacation planner of the family. You comb through travel articles, surf the web for other traveler's advice, and you know every minute detail of your vacation before your family ever packs their suitcases (and let's admit, you probably pack those as well).

If the above describes you, I have a secret to let you in on. There is a way to have a vacation of a lifetime and not plan a single detail. You just show up and they take care of the rest. You won't even have to research a thing, entertain your children, or worry about your next meal if you don't want to. You can just relax. That is how you will feel if you go on an Adventure by Disney tour. They are first class all the way and you can leave all your planning and worries at home and just enjoy your vacation.

Adventures by Disney offers guided trips throughout the world. Whether you choose to saddle up in Wyoming or brave the jungles in Africa, Adventures by Disney will take care of every moment and you can just sit back and enjoy the view.

My family was fortunate enough to win an Adventure by Disney to Costa Rica this summer. From the moment we arrived at the San Jose airport, I did not have to plan a single detail of our vacation. Our two guides for the week were Michael and Fico. They helped us settle into our hotel and filled us in our upcoming adventure.

Our first there days were spent in Arenal, which was a two hour bus ride from San Jose. On the way there, we stopped at the beautiful La Paz Waterfall and Butterfly Gardens. We took an easy hike to the bottom of a very refreshing waterfall and then wandered around the world's largest butterfly garden.

Our tour bus arrived at the Hotel Arenal Kioro just in time to take in a quick sunset view of the volcano before it disappeared into the mist. To say this hotel is spectacular would be an understatement. It is by far the nicest hotel at which any of us had ever stayed. The view from the room was phenomenal. You could practically reach out and touch the volcano from your balcony! After a leisurely buffet breakfast overlooking the volcano the next morning, we headed out for our biggest adventure of the trip, a zipline tour! I am very afraid of heights, so trust me when I say, if I can do it, anyone can. You are literally hanging hundreds of feet up in the air, flying over the rainforest from platform to platform. After a mini test ride to make sure you really want to go careening through the jungle, you are off! Children must be at least eight years old to zipline. They are able to ride tandem with an adult if that makes them (or you) feel more comfortable. For children younger than eight or adults who choose not to take the zipline, a very pleasant, slow gondola ride is waiting to take you back down through the rainforest.

After our adrenaline rush wore off, we spent a quiet afternoon with local artisans painting souvenirs and then winding down at the nearby Hidalgo Hot Springs. The hot springs are actually heated by the volcano and it had to be one of the most surreal places I have ever been. Words really can't describe it but if I had to pick a few: secluded, misty, otherworldly, pure bliss. There were at least five different pools, at various temperatures. It was the perfect ending to a very adventurous day.

Our last day in Arenal started off at the Corsicana Pineapple Plantation. This might not sound as exciting as ziplining through the rainforest, but our entire group had a fantastic time there. Our guide, nicknamed the Pineapple Slayer, would just snatch the pineapples up from the field, and after a few quick slices from his machete we were presented with the best pineapple we had ever tasted. The tour was not only educational, but the kids (as well as the adults) had a blast watching the Pineapple Slayer in action.

After gorging ourselves on pineapple, we headed to the Rio Sarapiqui to burn off some of those calories. We had never been whitewater rafting before and here we were preparing to go down Class II and III rapids. We were a bit hesitant, but hey, we survived ziplining didn't we? The whitewater rafting turned out to be a lot of fun. Under the supervision of our trusty guide, there was a lot of laughing, splashing, and teamwork involved in the hour that we braved the rapids. From the rapids, we also had great views of sloths hanging from the trees above us.

Our last two days were spent unwinding at the beach. We arrived there in style in our own private plane. The plane ride itself was enough adventure for me for one day (did I mention I'm afraid of heights?), so I was happy to spend the rest of the day being pampered at the local beach.

Our last day was spent exploring Manuel Antonio National Park. As we hiked through the park, our guides pointed out monkeys, sloths, deer, and all sorts of other creatures that were roaming free around us. Our hike ended at a beautiful cove where the water was calm and the howler monkeys and iguana kept you on your toes. They were everywhere! Several monkeys were brave enough to hop down on unattended blankets and see what they could "borrow" for the day.

Overall, it was definitely a vacation of a lifetime. I have been to almost all of the Disney resorts and on several Disney cruises, and by far, Adventures by Disney is a notch above the rest. If you really want to treat yourself and your family, I highly recommend booking a Disney Adventure. It will truly make you feel like Disney royalty!

    Dining Review: Boma

by Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist

Many restaurants at Walt Disney World seem to get mixed reviews, but there are also a select few that seem to receive rave reviews from nearly everyone who dines there. One of these is the dinner at Boma at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. That's a bit surprising, as it is home to some of the most unusual food on Walt Disney World property.

Boma is a buffet, offering a wide and varied selection of food from across the African continent. Much of it you won't have come across before, unless you're a very seasoned traveler, but having said that, there is still plenty that will be familiar to those more comfortable with meat and potatoes. One of the most frequent questions I hear about Boma is whether there's enough on offer for the picky eaters in a party? The answer to that is unreservedly "Yes!" and I say that, not because I've seen that answer from so many people over the years, but because I've also experienced it myself.

We've taken at least two people to Boma in recent years that would definitely fall into the picky eater category and they've come away praising the restaurant and saying that they would happily come back and eat there time and time again. So if that's a concern for you, have no fear. Everyone will be able to find something they enjoy.

But for us, the real enjoyment is sampling food that's new to us, and there's plenty of that to be found at Boma. The restaurant is designed to resemble an African marketplace and that's why you'll find a series of different areas called "pods," all with different types of food. There's one for soup and salad, another for vegetable accompaniments, one for meat and fish, and of course, one for dessert. There is an overwhelming choice, with probably more than 50 items available on any given night, and first time visitors often wonder where to start. Fortunately it's an easier choice for me, as a non meat eater, I usually head for the soups, followed by salads, then some fish with some vegetable accompaniments, of course leaving room for those desserts!

There isn't much explanation about any of the dishes you'll see, apart from their names and perhaps a couple of words about what's in them, but if you're unsure of anything or want more information, then don't be afraid to ask the chefs, who are always on hand, preparing more dishes for the hungry hoards. They're always happy to chat about the details of each dish and I've always found them to be very accommodating, particularly in pointing out which dishes are suitable for vegetarians. They'll also advise you as to how spicy dishes are, so you can judge whether you want to try them for yourself. And of course, that's the beauty about it being a buffet -- you can try a tiny amount at first and then if you like it, go back for more.

The way Boma works is that you just go up to the area that you want to sample. There's no line from one to another, like a conventional buffet, although the last time we were there, a lot of people were trying to do that and even the servers commented to us that they'd never witnessed that before. Don't worry if that happens to you - we did feel as if we were pushing in on occasions, but we've been to Boma enough times to know how the system should really work.

It's important to remember that the menu does change slightly every night, so you might not find all the items you see referred to here when you visit, but usually you'll come across some of them. My favorites include the wonderful curried coconut seafood soup, full of flavor, but not too hot and spicy, fufu - a porridge-like substance made from root vegetables, and the tamarind salmon. Again, this is another dish that's packed with flavor, but not so much that it overcomes the taste of the fish itself.

Perhaps one of the most famous items here and the one that certainly receives the most rave reviews are the zebra domes on the dessert table - a small pastry with chocolate coffee mousse inside, but stray beyond those and you'll also find some other wonderful dessert offerings, including chocolate mousse crunch and a pineapple upside down cake to die for.

Dinner is served at Boma from 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm nightly, although hours may vary seasonally. Dinner costs $26.99 for adults and $12.99 for children between the ages of three and nine, plus tax and gratuity. The price includes non-alcoholic, non-specialty drinks. It's one of the Disney restaurants where holiday pricing does apply, so at certain times of the year, including Christmas, the main summer months and Easter, you may pay more than that.

Boma is also open for breakfast daily from 7:30 am until 11:00 am and the price is $16.99 for adults and $9.99 for children between the ages of three and nine. It features more than 40 items on the menu, including many traditional American breakfast items, along with a few more unusual ones, with the West African Frunch drink, made up of lemonade, pineapple, guava, orange and papaya juice a firm favorite with many morning visitors.

About the Author: Cheryl and husband Mark live in England and love to travel, particularly to America. They are in the process of visiting every Disney theme park around the world, having already been to Disneyland Resort Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. They are looking forward to returning to America to visit both Walt Disney World and Disneyland in California and their trip to Japan in the spring to visit the Tokyo Disney Resort.
