Fatal Bus Accident at Fort Wilderness A 10-year-old Florida boy riding a bicycle died today when he and a Disney bus collided on Big Pine Trail, apparently in the vicinity of the Meadow recreation complex. Reports at press time indicate the boy was on a bike path, veered off into the road, and struck the side of a bus. Our hearts go out to the child's family, the bus driver and passengers, and anyone else touched by this incident.

Dine with a Turtle on the Disney Dream Disney Cruise Line has revealed that Crush, the 150-year-old sea turtle with the surfer dude attitude, will be the star performer in the Animator's Palate dining room when the cruise line's newest ship enters service in 2011. While the dining room will continue to have animation studio-inspired decor, it will transform to an undersea world, and the animated sea turtle from Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo will use the room's many video screens to table-hop and interact with diners. "Dude, what's that you're munchin'? Sea-sar salad? Does that have any, like, seaweed in it, dude?"

TSA: TRAVEL SIZES APPROVED!
'I found a great website that offers TSA approved travel sizes of most anything you want. I purchased laundry soap, fabric softener and other items. Their prices are actually pretty good also. Visit http://www.alltravelsizes.com. My order was delivered quickly. They even throw in a clear plastic bag for you to use.'

PARENTAL PANIC
'As a parent, before you leave on vacation prepare yourself mentally for one thing-- only you are determined to hit all major park attractions and only you think that your kids want to do the same. Resolve that it is OK to miss some things and that your children will appreciate some planned time at the hotel pool. It works well to spend the morning at the pool, pull out and go back to your room at about 2:00 pm and by 3:00 pm you can be on your way to one of the parks. If you don't mentally prepare yourself, it can be frustrating when you first realize that kids are just kids and they enjoy the simple pleasures in life, even at Walt Disney World.'

DOING DISNEYQUEST
'If you're strapped for time and you want to visit DisneyQuest, consider going the same day you go to Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom often closes at 5:00 pm, and DisneyQuest is open until 10:00 or 11:00 pm. You can have time to go back to your hotel, relax a bit, grab some dinner, and still get in a full 5+ hours at DisneyQuest that night.'

(Please note: Players can win once every three months.)

Here is this week's journal entry:

"You just never know what you're going to find when you look up. Take the World's Largest Interurban Electric Railway System at Disney's Hollywood Studios, as an example. I had no idea it existed until I looked up today while I was out for a stroll with my pal Bill. Board walks have nothin' on this one, not even in Hollywood."

Exactly what is the "World's Largest Interurban Electric Railway System" at Walt Disney World?

Q and A: With Jennifer and Dave

Calie71 asks: "We traditionally attend evening Extra Magic Hours. Are the morning Extra Magic Hours better?"

Dave answers: "Personally, I'd rather have three hours in the evening than one hour in the morning. But for me, it's not about how many rides I can enjoy, but my enjoyment of the park as a whole. Three hours, therefore, beats one hour.

I do agree, though, that the morning EMH is more productive if you want small crowds and short lines. Chalk it off to human nature. Most folks like to sleep in a little bit while on vacation. Those who can resist that urge come out ahead."

Hi, {{user('firstname')}}!

The view from our near-legendary back window has changed again! The leaves have begun to shed their summer green and take on brilliant oranges and reds, and an occasional rich brown. The chill in the air promises just the right conditions for University of Michigan football, and we have the traffic jams out on Stadium Boulevard to prove it. Wasn't it just last week that we celebrated the first green hints of spring, and the impending start of baseball season?

"Hold it! Did Jennifer and Dave move south of the equator?" No, as we imagine you know, it's April 1, the one day in the year when news editors throughout the English-speaking world go out of their way to make their publications and staffs appear foolish. For all of you who celebrate your birthdays on this date (like Jennifer's sister)... maybe next year you'll have a celebration free of whoopie cushions, dribble glasses, and collapsing furniture. April Fools!

Give a Day, Get a Disney Day: A Success for Non-Profits
Jodi Isom, PassPorter Guest Contributor

Now that the Disney "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" program has officially closed to new volunteers, I wanted to write about the affect it had on one non-profit organization. I work as the Manager of Volunteer Services at Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Fox Cities Area of Wisconsin.

When I first heard about this program, I got very excited because it combined two things I love very much – Habitat for Humanity/volunteering and Disney! You see I am a Disney fanatic myself – a DVC owner, a D23 inaugural member, a regular annual passholder and someone who has been to Walt Disney World over 20 times since childhood. So naturally I was thrilled to be able to combine part of my job with my Disney passion.

Here at Habitat for Humanity in Wisconsin, we don't build houses in the winter. It's just too cold! So normally we don't have a lot of volunteer activity happening in January, when this program began. However, the Disney program came during the perfect year for us. We had just bought an older building to house our offices the previous May and since we were very busy building houses that summer and fall, we put off remodeling our office until winter.

We had plenty of volunteer help from our group of regulars for the office remodel project, but I was concerned about how we would feed these volunteers. We have restaurants and local volunteers who typically make lunches for our construction volunteers during our building season, but many of them like to "take the winter off" from this expectation.

Also, I was hoping to find a volunteer opportunity for the Disney program that could involve families with children as young as age 6 (Disney's minimum age for the program). So I decided to see if we could get our volunteers fed through the Disney program. I submitted my volunteer opportunity on the Volunteer Opportunity Portal on the handsonnetwork.org website and it was immediately accepted. I titled it "Habitat meals … ideal for families." That title seemed to catch a lot of people's attention.

The very next day my volunteer opportunity was posted and the flood gates opened! It was a good thing I was not as busy as other times of the year when this program began because I was flooded with emails and calls from families wanting to sign up. Each week I was receiving approximately 20-30 contacts about this program. It was very popular!

It was fun connecting with new volunteers and getting them plugged in to helping Habitat for Humanity in this way. Basically I asked each family to commit to providing one meal for our office remodel volunteers. They had to work as a family to plan the meal, shop for the items, cook and bake to prepare the meal and then deliver it to our Habitat office and serve it to our construction volunteers. I also offered a few other opportunities for adults, like warehouse work. A co-worker of mine at our Habitat ReStore (a retail store associated with Habitat for Humanity) also joined in on this program and she was able to offer meal needs too as well as many other needs at the store, like cashiers, warehouse work and generally helping to keep the ReStore running.

In addition to numerous families who volunteered with us, I had two sports teams that signed up to help us out. One was a softball team from a local university that spent a day doing a special project at our Habitat ReStore. The other was a volleyball team whose members are going to Disney in June for a competition. They split up their large group and helped do two things for us. They fed a group dinner for a training session we were providing to our newly found Speaker's Bureau volunteers. They also fed and ran the children's area for us with approximately 40 kids in attendance at our annual recognition event for our other volunteers.

We even had a partnership with the cast of "Little House on the Prairie: the Musical" that is currently touring the country and also partnering with Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the cities where their musical is being performed. So one lucky local family who volunteered with us through the Disney program even got to serve breakfast to this cast, including Melissa Gilbert!

One of our new volunteers, Elisa Tremblay, her husband, and three of her five children provided lunch to our Habitat ReStore and found themselves featured in the newspaper! They plan to go to Disney this summer for the Star Wars weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Elisa said, "We thought it'd be a great way to get a ticket to Disney for the day. We have five kids, so any help getting into Disney is wonderful." She went on to say, "The kids have helped with Habitat for Humanity through their school and my husband helped out here before too, so we just thought it'd be a great place to come since we were already familiar with this cause." Louie Thein, a volunteer at the Habitat ReStore the day the Tremblay family donated lunch, said "We deeply appreciate it. It's a nice thing they're doing." Food is always a great way to show appreciation to people, especially volunteers!

Overall, we were able to utilize the help of 228 volunteers providing meals at our office remodel and another 174 at our Habitat ReStore. So that is over 400 new volunteers who have been exposed to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity just here in our community!

We do have plans to stay connected with these new volunteers. Both Habitat ReStore staff and I have kept track of the Disney volunteers and plan to invite them occasionally to help out with meals or other special events again. In fact, our largest annual fundraiser is just around the corner, a spring walk where we try to raise over $20,000. I plan to invite the families who volunteered for the Disney "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" program to walk with us. Again, it's a perfect family volunteer opportunity!

It is our hope at this local non-profit that the result of this wonderful Disney program will be new volunteers who want to stay involved and help us provide home-ownership opportunities for families in need of a simple, decent, affordable home.

I also want to thank everyone who is reading this and volunteers already in their community. It people like you who make your community a better place by giving of your time, talents and treasures!

If you didn't have a chance to volunteer through the Disney program, please consider giving of your time and abilities to help out a local non-profit in need. YOU can make a world of difference!

Pre-Historic Eats at T-Rex: A Disney Dining Review
Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist

Restaurants change, they come and go, and some are more eagerly anticipated than others. As much as I love the food at Disney, I also love good theming. So from the first mention of a new restaurant at Walt Disney World's Downtown Disney that would feature dinosaurs, I couldn't wait to see the place, especially as it was coming from the creators of the Rainforest Cafe.

T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure opened back in 2008, only a few weeks before our visit to Walt Disney World that year, but sadly by the time I knew that, our dining plans were all settled. I did look to see how we could incorporate trying out T-Rex, but as we were on the Deluxe Dining Plan and wanted to make the best use of our credits, it proved impossible, as sadly this restaurant isn't on the various Disney dining plans.

However, we were able to take a look inside and what a treat we got! My expectations for this place were already set pretty high and it's very easy to be disappointed in situations like that, but nothing could be further from that. This restaurant has distinct different areas for you to enjoy your meal, with the coral reef, taking you on an underwater journey, to your left as you arrive.

Once you pass through the obligatory shop, which contains your opportunity to build your own dinosaur, courtesy of Build-A-Bear workshop, you'll see the kitchens to the far right hand side, with vibrant fire colors to highlight that fact. Further beyond, the contrast couldn't be more startling, with the ice room, filled with cold colors, such as blue and purple. Just outside the entrance to this is perhaps my favorite part, the collection of woolly mammoths. If only I could adopt the baby woolly mammoth they have here, I'd be happy.

Not only is it adorable, but I was very impressed by the movement in these animals whenever the meteorite storm hits. This storm hits with alarming regularity, something it has in common with the Rainforest Cafe, where you never cease to be amazed by how you can set your watch by the rainstorms in there! These can be a little loud and may be a bit frightening for youngsters not expecting it, but on our visits here, we saw no sign of any traumatized kids, unlike our experiences in the Rainforest Cafe to date.

It was only a couple of months ago that we finally got the opportunity to do more than admire the architecture and actually got to try out the food. At first, when we arrived for our meal, a Sunday lunch, the size of the crowd outside waiting to check in looked exceptionally daunting, but it moved remarkably quickly and soon we were giving our details at the podium. After that, we moved forward, into the restaurant itself, and we were seated exceptionally quickly. We didn't ask to be seated anywhere in particular, although I was hoping for the coral reef area, as I had been very impressed by the theming there. Barring that, anywhere near my baby woolly mammoth would have worked for me. As it was, we were in the coral reef area and spent a long time, not only studying our menus, but everything around us. There's a lot to keep every member of the family spellbound for some time, but fortunately we didn't find the service to be slow at all. We were quickly seen by our server and had the menu explained to us.

The first thing I felt, looking at it, is this is somewhere you need to come hungry. As you'd expect, there were lots of puns on dinosaur names on the menu items, but it was clear that the emphasis was on feeding the hungriest T-Rex. We shared a Supersaurus Sampler and, my goodness, that thing lived up to its name. It was absolutely huge and included spinach and pepper jack queso with tortilla chips, onion rings, Brachiosaurus Bruschetta and T-Rexadillas. The latter two are available separately as appetizers, if your appetite won't stretch to quite this much food to start your meal!

For main course, my attention went to the Jurassic shrimp skewers and again these things turned out to be massive when they arrived! The flavors all worked perfectly together for me and I loved the mango salsa and the Raptor rice it was served with. My husband opted for the "Primitive" braised pork shank, which came with potato gnocchi sautéed with wild mushrooms, carrots, and peas. I heard no complaints from him!

If both these dishes sound heavy, then there is relief, with a selection of soups and salads on the menu, with choices for vegetarians, fish and meat eaters. Burgers and sandwiches are also major draws here and you'll find a full selection of meat, fish, and pasta dishes. It's probably one of the more expansive menus I've seen at Disney in some time, which made a pleasant change, as we had noticed menus at some other restaurants getting much more restricted.

Sadly, we didn't have room to sample dessert, although maybe one day I can try the Chocolate Extinction. With enough for two and a gigantic portion of chocolate fudge cake, along with ice cream, whipped cream, and fudge and caramel sauces. If I'm ever to become extinct, that's the way I want to go!

If I'm completely honest, I really hadn't expected much from T-Rex in terms of food. I had come here more to sample the atmosphere, but the food didn't disappoint at all. The huge portions that were served up meant it wasn't bad value for the money, either. It's certainly somewhere I'd be happy to return to, although I'll be sure to work up a real Jurassic appetite before I do!

T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure is located in the Marketplace area of Walt Disney World's Downtown Disney and is open for lunch and dinner daily from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.
