POWDER POWER 'When leaving the beach at Castaway Cay, my son wanted to run back into the water to get the sand off his feet before putting on his sandals. I told him that his feet would just get covered in sand again. I had him sit down and I took a small bottle of baby powder and immediately starting putting it on everyone's feet, including my son's feet which were still a tad bit wet with sand. The sand immediately began to fall off everyone's feet as I spread the baby powder on our feet. We all looked a tad bit weird in our sandals with slightly whitened feet but as I walked through the sand with my sandals, the powder was immediately repelled. It worked like a charm!' -- contributed by Courtney
TRAIN TRAVEL 'If you have an irritable child who needs a nap while you are in the Magic Kingdom, get on the Walt Disney World Railroad train. The movement of the train will lull them to sleep and you can ride for as long as you need to let them sleep. Also works for irritable and tired adults...' -- contributed by Elaine
REMINDER RIBBON 'We like to rent the strollers at the parks. The first time we went to Walt Disney World we were surprised when they moved our stroller to a different location after we went on a ride. As we know now, the cast members move the strollers towards the ride's exit or park them closer together to save space. It took us forever to find our stroller in the sea of matching strollers. Now I bring an obnoxious ribbon to tie on the handle bar of our stroller so that we can locate it easily. I keep the ribbon in our suitcases so I won't forget it for the next trip.' -- contributed by Janel

Captain's Corner:
Treasure Hunting Game
Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, 'PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World.' The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this 'treasure' at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin. (Please note: Players can win once every three months.)
Here is this week's journal entry:
"I was strolling about Disney's Hollywood Studios this morning, taking in the sights, when I happened to look up and see the old Earful Tower! WOW! I was amazed at its transformation. Sure, I know they updated the name on it when the park changed names last year, but they've recently really done it up right. I'm highly impressed with the Tower's 'new look.'"
What is different about the Earful Tower, besides the updated name on it?
For bonus credit, locate the photographic evidence in the PassPorter Photo Archive and post a comment with the photo!
Congratulations to Terri K. who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! Terri was the first person to identify the year the Liberty Bell in Liberty Square was cast as 1989. Bonus credit goes to materstater as the first person to locate the photo in our PassPorter Photo Archive. To view the original clue, see last week's newsletter.
Send your full answer to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in a future newsletter, along with the correct answer!

Q and A: With Jennifer and Dave
beyondelsewhere asks: "I'm curious as to how Soarin' stacks up in the motion sickness area. It looks really cool, but I am afraid I'll leave the ride with a spinning head and stomach. It looks like it might be a little too elevator/airplane take-off and landing for me."
Dave answers: "There's very little actual motion in Soarin' -- consider it an oversized porch swing with an IMAX movie. The motion isn't what is likely to make you sick -- the movement on the movie screen is more likely to do that (something that even happens in regular IMAX theaters, where the seats don't move). The actual motion is far less extreme than a ferris wheel - you go up at the beginning of the ride, and then hang there, with gentle motion that helps accentuate the movement you see onscreen. If you begin to feel queasy, closing your eyes should set everything to right."

From the Authors: Pre-Orders, Top 10, and Canada!
Hi, {{user('firstname')}}!
Our Disney cruisers have been asking, and now we have the answer ... the 2009 edition of PassPorter's Disney Cruise Line and its Ports of Call is now available for pre-order in the PassPorter Store! As always, this year's edition will be fully updated, including full port-of-call information for this year's Special Itinerary cruises, which will bring the Disney Magic to Tortola and St. Croix for the first time. We'll also take a peek ahead at the 2010 European itnineraries for the Magic. As always, the guidebook will be available in paperback, in a Deluxe Starter Kit in our popular six-ring binder, and as a refill kit for those who already have a PassPorter deluxe binder.
PassPorter Hits Bestseller List!
Have we been telling you that sales of Disney guidebooks take off right after Christmas? We have proof positive in this week's Nielsen BookScan rankings; PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009 has rocketed to #10 on the travel bestseller list, its highest ranking ever (we hit #12 last year)! This is a combination of two factors ... a serious bump-up in sales of guidebooks now that holiday season has passed, and the rapid drop-off in sales for gift books (i.e., One Million Places You'll Never Want to Visit, A Year in Punxsutawney (bundled with the DVD of Groundhog Day), A Trudge Through the Bog, etc.)
PassPorters for Canadians
Attention Canadian PassPorter fans (and PassPorter fans anywhere with Canadian friends and relatives)! We are delighted to report that PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009 is now available in Costco's Canadian stores (sorry, they're not at Costco in the U.S.) and from Canada's biggest bookseller, Chapters/Indigo! This is the first time ever that our books are available in significant quantity in Canada -- consider it the fulfillment of one of our Decade of Dreams dreams! We encourage our Canadian friends to show these retailers your support for our books -- if they sell well this year, you can look forward to easy, local availability of our books in future years (and you can save a bunch of money by not paying for ridiculously high international postal charges).
Free E-Book Offer Ending Soon!
To help you start off your 2009 travel planning in style, we're offering a FREE copy of our newly updated e-book, PassPorter's Disney 500 (see below) with the purchase of a PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009 guidebook (any format) in our PassPorter Store online between Tuesday, December 30, 2008 and Saturday, January 10, 2009. The e-book will be available for your immediate download after purchase, so you can get started planning while you wait for your 2009 edition to arrive! Please note that this offer is not retroactive for orders placed before Dec. 30, 2008. Order at http://www.passporterstore.com/store/2009.aspx now!
Updated Versions of Two of our Most Popular E-Books!

We ring-in the new year with updated versions of PassPorter's Disney Speed Planner: The Easy Ten-Step Program and PassPorter's Disney 500: Fast Tips for Walt Disney World Trips. These e-books are chock-full of great advice, at a really, really great price. Each can be downloaded for $4.95 or less, and are available at no extra charge for all current members of PassPorter's Club and to anyone who previously purchased one (or both) of these books at our online store (Club members can download in the club area, and previous purchasers can sign in to the PassPorter Store, find the purchase in their order history, and download again).
Decade of Dreams Tour Update!
Folks on the PassPorter message boards have been asking, "What's up with the New York City Decade of Dreams Tour event scheduled for May?" Well, we don't have the details for you quite yet, but we can tell you to reserve the last weekend of May, when the PassPorter Team is in New York for Book Expo America, the biggest book industry trade show in the U.S. We can let out a little hint, though ... A spoonful of sugar helps Ariel go under the sea and Simba rule the pride lands. Stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks!
PassPorter's Decade of Dreams Tour is going to Disneyland for the Backstage Magic Adventures by Disney on October 13-18, 2009! Our Adventures by Disney package is 6 days/5 nights of VIP treatment -- we'll visit Hollywood landmarks, see how the magic is made at Walt Disney Imagineering, eat lunch on the lot at the Walt Disney Studios, and get a peak behind the fantasy at the Disneyland(R) Resort. The price includes an exclusive group discount and there is an early booking bonus of a $75 Disney Gift Card for the first 10 bookings from our Decade of Dreams travel provider, Mouse Fan Travel. Get all the details, a day-by-day itinerary, and prices at the Decade of Dreams Tour Headquarters. This also means we have selected the dates for the Decade of Dreams Tour visit to Disneyland! Tour festivities at Disneyland will begin on Friday, October 16, 2009 and will continue through Tuesday, October 20. Stay tuned for the schedule of events!
What is PassPorter's Decade of Dreams Tour? PassPorter is celebrating our 10th anniversary in 2009 in a year-long celebration from coast-to-coast! Everyone is invited and all are warmly welcome to join us at all or part of our celebration. Travel Feature:
Bellagio of Las Vegas: Simply Bellissimo! Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist
You can easily get spoiled when you have a bit of luxury in your life and that's very much been the case with us when it comes to hotels.
Having stayed first at deluxe resorts at Walt Disney World and then having become Disney Vacation Club members, let's just say we're used to the finer things in life whenever we travel anywhere and that includes hotels. However, there's one place in the world where you can get luxury at a reasonable price, and the simple reason is it's something that every hotel there offers -- and there's exceptionally fierce competition. Welcome to Las Vegas! Not only is it the gambling capital of the world, it's also home to some of the world's most opulent resorts and they're all within easy reach of each other, so they're all desperate to get your trade. That means amazing rooms available at a reasonable rate.
That was very much our experience when we went to book a room there for our recent visit. On our first visit together two years ago, we had stayed at the Venetian and while we had loved our time there, we did feel that it was a bit far from the action, located towards the top end of the Strip. When we left Vegas, we left feeling that we hadn't really done the place justice, thanks in part to our jetlag, which often meant that we were up in the early hours of the morning and then falling asleep by early evening. It meant we didn't get to experience a lot of things that we had hoped to do in Vegas, and one of those things was viewing the fountains outside the Bellagio. Sadly, the only night that we were able to see them, the wind was too strong and the fountains were turned off. So, where better to stay than on our return to Vegas, but at the Bellagio?
Looking at prices, it quickly became apparent that a lake view room, which would give us a direct view of the fountains outside, wouldn't cost that much more than a standard room; and in this case, I guessed that the view outside would be worth the extra money. We were talking something like $50 more each night. Was it worth it? You bet it was -- every single cent. The fountains at the Bellagio perform every afternoon and evening, unless the winds get too stiff (in which case there's a distinct possibility that they will end up soaking the spectators and presumably the drivers along the Strip, which apparently doesn't go over well)!
On weekdays, there's a show every half-hour from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and then every 15 minutes until midnight. On weekends and holidays the shows start at midday, taking place every half hour until 8pm, and again every 15 minutes after that until midnight. This meant we had plenty of opportunities to catch the fountains performing, and that's exactly what we did. They're certainly more spectacular after dark, as the lights definitely add something than you just don't get during daylight hours.
As for the rooms themselves, ours was beautiful. It was such a pleasant change to have so much room in which to lay out our suitcases after some very small rooms in central Chicago and New York City. As we walked in, there was a hallway, with the bathroom off to our right. This was huge, with expansive floor space, a walk-in shower, and a bath (although interestingly not a spa bath, which I had half expected from such an upscale resort).
The bedroom also had lots of floor space, along with a desk by the window and comfy chairs -- just perfect for admiring the fountains! As well as the space and the huge king sized bed, which was perhaps the most comfortable we found during all of our stops on this trip, they also, perhaps unsurprisingly, had a really cool gadget that I fell in love with. You could just reach out from your bed and open or close the window drapes -- I must admit being able to do that did make me feel like a star!
As for the rest of the complex, the Bellagio, like all the other major resorts on the Strip in Las Vegas, is colossal. It can easily take you five or ten minutes to exit the resort, as you walk first through the casino, then past the restaurants, and out through a very upscale shopping mall that includes Chanel amongst its retailers. The lobby is something quite breathtaking. The second you walk inside, your eyes head upwards to the ceiling, which is decorated with 2,000 hand-blown glass flowers. (Disney cruisers may recognize the blown glass flowers as the work of Dale Chihuly, the sculptor behind the chandeliers in the lobbies of the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.)
From there, your eye then gradually registers that there's more color beyond that in the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Garden. The beauty about this is that the display changes regularly throughout the year. Two years ago, we saw the spring display, which was stunning with the color from the flowering bulbs, but I wasn't sure what to expect for fall. If anything, this was just as colorful, using unusual and striking plants such as chili peppers, along with a life-size scarecrow, a tree with a face cut into it that moved, and even what looked like a human-sized Venus Fly Trap! What you see in here is unique and innovative and, as it's under a glass ceiling, it looks very different during the day and at night. Looking at the detail that goes into these designs, it's not hard to accept that more than 100 people put these displays together.
One of the other major draws about staying here is that the Bellagio is also home to our favorite Cirque du Soleil show, simply titled "O." It's based above, on, and in water, and is a show that every visitor to Las Vegas should see. We saw it for the second time and were just as awe struck as during our first visit to it. This is something we will see every time we're in Vegas.
The Bellagio's location in the middle of the Strip made it a joy to get to the other shows we enjoyed during our stay, as many of the other resorts are within easy walking distance. We really felt that we had found a home during our time at the Bellagio, and we've already agreed that it will be our home on future visits to Las Vegas, complete with that amazing view of the fountains again!

Disney Feature:
Saving Money for Disney: Tips and Tricks Heather Macdonald, PassPorter Guest Contributor
Times are tough this year. How are we going to be able to go to Walt Disney World with the economy in shambles? We've all read about how to save money while on a Disney vacation. We've all thought about budgeting while on vacation and how to get the most from our Disney dollars. What about saving for our Disney vacations? I'm going to start with everyday ways to save your cold hard cash, followed by budget tips to help you add to that cash stash.
Saving money isn't easy, especially when things are already a little tight. Saving for a vacation at Walt Disney World may sound like a luxury and for some it is, but for some it is absolutely necessary. It is absolutely necessary for me at least every six months. I just got back from MouseFest and in 2009 I have trips booked in May, June, October, and if you give me a month... next December. How do I do it? Well it isn't easy, but it is worth it.
My first money saver sounds like a no brainer: Give something up. Some frivolous little thing that you do because it's convenient or because everyone else at the office does it. This may be the hardest thing you've ever done, but think about how much money you might be able to save in a year if you stopped going to (insert coffeehouse chain here). A large double mocha skinny latte is how much, about $5.00 right? Let's say that you only stop for coffee when you are going in to work, so five days a week. $5 multiplied by 5 days is $25 dollars a week times 52 weeks a year is: $1300. You just bought airfare for a family of 5 or a week at Port Orleans Riverside. I'm not saying quit the caffeine habit, but think about the alternative. Buy a coffee pot and a travel mug. You might spend about $35 total. Even if you splurge and buy the espresso machine, you can get a good one for about $50 now, you will save about $1000 dollars per year. What else qualifies in this category? Eating lunch out, pizza delivery, smoking, having your nails done, that McDonald's habit you know you have (okay, that I know I have). I gave up my after work drinks with co-workers. I buy fairly inexpensive red wine and have a drink at the house when I get home. Believe it or not, this saves me a ton of money in tips and taxis!
Make sure you are putting your "vice money" directly into a dedicated savings account for your vacation. Your checking account does not earn interest! Open a high interest savings account; online banks are running about 3 or 4% interest as opposed to the less than 1% you may get from your bank. Deposit the money each week or month, and then take it out when your final payment is due. If you have a long savings period you may want to consider something with a slightly higher interest rate, such as a CD. I do not recommend putting your money into anything risky; you might lose your vacation!
Next, clip coupons, shop only on sale, and don't lock yourself into one brand. I don't just mean the coupons that come in the Sunday paper. Any time I am making any kind of purchase I do an internet search for coupon codes and deals. For example, the park-and-fly that I use at the airport always has a coupon for at least a $1 savings per day. I do clip the coupons out of the Sunday paper, but only for things I already use or buy. Do not end up trying new products because you found a coupon. In addition to your Sunday paper there are several good online coupon services out there. I get e-mail from www.couponmom.com every week. Buy the brand that is on sale, but only if it costs less than the store brand. When you get home from the store, figure out how much money you saved by buying on sale or buying the store brand instead of the name brand. Make sure you move that amount from your checking account to your savings account.
My last easy money-saving tip is to use alternatives. We have seen this already with my coffee example, but there are some things that I just can't do without. Water in the city of New Orleans has been heavily chlorinated since Hurricane Katrina. My cats won't even drink the tap water anymore. I have to buy bottled water. I switched from buying cases of little bottles to buying one gallon jugs. A gallon of water went from costing about $1.50 to about 67 cents. This week at one of my favorite discount chains I found the big Brita water filter pitcher on sale for $24. Guess what? No more bottled water in my house; just a pitcher and a Nalgene water bottle. Substitutions like this can really add up!
Okay so now you have a savings account that has enough money to go on a Disney vacation. Oh wait a minute... you just started saving. You don't have your final payment in your account quite yet. That's okay! One of the greatest things about a Disney vacation is that you don't have to pay for it all at once. I try to buy pieces when I have extra money. For example; on my most recent trip in December, for which I did not have a ton of money saved, I bought a one-way ticket on Southwest in September. In October I bought the return ticket. In November I purchased my Annual Pass exchange certificate. I booked the room through DVC in August with developer points. If you have purchased a package you or your travel agent can make payments in as little as $25 increments. Spread out over the course of a year, a $2000 Disney vacation costs $166.67 per month or $38.47 per week. Remember that coffee that you stopped drinking? That coffee covers $100 of your monthly payment. $66.67 is about 4 lunches out. You can do that can't you?
Speaking of travel agents, one of the best ways to make sure you are getting the best deal is to use a travel agent. There are many different companies that specialize in Disney travel. Your travel agent can check for and apply any new discounts that become available for you trip. There may also be extra incentives for booking with a travel agent, including a lower quote than you get from Disney directly. Some agents offer access to special events or Cruise Line shipboard credits.
I hope I was some help in your money saving pursuits. See you at Walt Disney World!
