FROM THE AUTHORS: Happy New Year!

====================================================

Hi, {{user("firstname")}}!

Happy New Year! We hope that you've all had as warm and rewarding a holiday season as we've had, filled with special people and special memories. We spent New Years Eve at home, while a heavy snow fell outside. When the time came, we tuned into Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve on Disney-owned ABC TV, just for the sake of seeing the midnight fireworks over Cinderella Castle (which they show every year). Imagine our disappointment when they failed to appear! Oh well, we did get to see a snippet the next day, on The Weather Channel. (No, we didn't stay up until 3:00 am to see if they had a shot of Disneyland's fireworks.)

Based on the large influx of visits to our web site, we know more than a few of you are beginning to think about (and plan) your next Disney vacation. In preparation for all of you, Jennifer has been sprucing up the web site and creating NEW e-worksheets for our PassPorter's Club passholders. The new e-worksheets -- which are PassPorter-formatted PDF documents that you can personalize with your vacation plans, save, and print to your specifications -- include a character checklist, a multiple resort reservation tracker, a caregiver information sheet, and a meal tracker for a large family. These new e-worksheets join the 40 existing e-worksheets in our collection that cover the gamut from vacation overviews and Disney Dining Plan trackers to Disney pin collection and pressed coin organizers. The e-worksheets are available free of extra charges to our PassPorter's Club passholders, who also get access to our seven e-books, super-sized photos, and more. More details on the new e-worksheets are in the purple Club Update box below. More information on PassPorter's Club is at http://www.passporter.com/club -- look for the free e-worksheets to try out!

Speaking of planning, PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2008 (already a national travel bestseller) and our other books and e-books will be ready for you -- just drop by the PassPorter Store at http://www.passporter.com/store/2008.aspx

TRAVEL FEATURE: Dining In New York City: More Than Just a Meal (Part 2 of 2)

========================================================

by Jill Koenigs, PassPorter Guest Contributor

(Click here to read part one of Jill's culinary tour of NYC: http://www.passporter.com/news/news122707.htm#travel )

Before heading back into Manhattan, we made a stop in Brooklyn for a mid-afternoon snack at the original Junior's (386 Flatbush Avenue Extension at Dekalb Avenue). We were escorted to our table past a delectable dessert case and through what seemed like half a city block of tables. Everything about this restaurant was huge; the menu, the portions and the restaurant itself! After perusing the list of cheesecakes, I finally decided on the carrot cake cheesecake and literally gasped when it was placed it front of me. It consisted of a layer of carrot cake topped by a layer of cheesecake and then topped off with another layer of carrot cake. This creation was then frosted with a delicious cream cheese icing. Junior's knows its cheesecakes!

One of our guilty pleasures in New York City is known simply as "the place with the chili pepper lights" among our group. Since we had newbies with us, we knew that we had to initiate them into the surreal world of Milon (93 1st Ave., between 5th and 6th Streets). The cuisine is Indian, but the experience is out of this world. The restaurant itself is tiny. I am pretty certain that I would come close to touching both sides of the restaurant if I stood in the middle with my arms outstretched. Tables are lined up on either side of the restaurant and patrons are packed in like sardines, so it's not a place for someone with claustrophobia. The real magic of this restaurant is the hundreds of chili pepper lights and Christmas ornaments that hang from the ceiling and wrap you in a warm red cocoon throughout your meal.

In the past, I have enjoyed several wonderful meals, but this year my selection was not my best. I love cauliflower, so when I spotted a dish on the menu highlighting this vegetable I was sold. It was just okay, but I certainly didn't go hungry after our appetizers of vegetable samosas and naan bread served with chutney. My table mates also were more than willing to share dishes such as tikka masala with chicken in a tomato cream sauce and a red snapper that was marinated in a perfect blend of spices.

The piece de resistance of our evening is when we designate one person among our party to be the birthday girl. The birthday girl this year was the person who volunteered to run down to the wine store to buy two bottles of wine for us (they do not sell alcohol at Milon but will happily open it and serve it for you). At the end of our meal, she knew something was amiss when everyone at the table could not stop smiling. When the lights started flashing, the Indian music began playing and everyone in the room began clapping, she knew something was up. When a dish of mango ice cream with a candle in it was placed in front of her, we had to confess to her that she was our honorary birthday girl of the evening. You just cannot go to Milon without hearing the birthday song -- even if you do have to tell a white lie. When you receive you check at the end of your meal, you almost have to question if you are still in New York City. It is one of the more inexpensive meals that you will find in this pricey city.

Another repeat destination for us every year is Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill (102 Fifth Ave.). We all have a slight crush on the redhead from Food Network fame, so it's fun to visit one of his restaurants. The atmosphere immediately puts you in a festive frame of mind. The large and airy dining room features a beautiful wooden bar on one side and warm, southwestern colors on the walls. Our favorite meal here is brunch, so we were seated at our round table in the middle of the restaurant at high noon. As you would imagine at a Southwestern-themed restaurant, the margaritas are a must. They combine the perfect marriage of sweet and tart with that extra kick of tequila. After we placed our obligatory margarita order, a bread basket filled with blue cornbread and pastries was placed in the middle of our table. I could have made a meal on these alone, but I knew what awaited me with an appetizer and an entree. I started with a barbecue pork quesadilla that combined the smoky sweetness of barbecue with a smooth Oaxaca cheese and crispy tortillas. For my entree, I had grilled mahi mahi with a roasted pineapple chile sauce. The food simply bursts with flavor. Every mouthful is a different experience. Mesa Grill is a bright and bold experience - - from the decor to the fresh flavors of the food, you will not be disappointed.

Believe it or not, the Mesa Grill was not our only fine dining experience that day. The South Carolina contingent had a special evening planned at the James Beard House (167 W. 12th St.). Coincidentally, one of our local chefs from Columbia, South Carolina was experiencing what must have been the highlight of his career that evening. He had been selected to cook a southern extravaganza at the James Beard House. James Beard was a renowned food writer and chef who left his home as a showplace to cultivate new chefs. Preparing a meal for members of the society is a great honor, so we called it fate and made reservations. The evening was a culinary tribute to the South. We were wined and dined with wines for each course and a menu that consisted of fried green tomatoes, she crab soup, shrimp and grits, quail, and a pecan tart to finish. Half of the fun that evening was hearing the comments from our New York City table mates as they tasted shrimp and grits and collards. They were truly impressed and we were proud to call ourselves South Carolinians that night.

Pastis (9 9th Avenue) was our destination for brunch the next day. This restaurant is set in the style of a French cafe - it's loud, busy, bursting with people, and full of energy. Pastis is also great for people watching because it is also a hangout for celebrities. In the past, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon and Hillary Swank had been spotted. Today, however, the food and drink were the only stars that we managed to see. Since it was brunch, we all started with a champagne cocktail. We ordered a basket of breads and pastries to start and then we each ordered an entree. I chose a baked pasta dish which served as the perfect comfort food on a cold and blustery day while the rest of my companions ordered egg dishes. As soon as we stepped back outside into the cold day, we spotted our celebrity. Danny Aiello (of Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and Cher's Moonstruck fame) was shooting a commercial across the street. We stood for a while watching take after take before we continued on satisfied that we got to see at least one celebrity!

Dining for us in New York City is not just about the food - - it's about the entire experience. Nothing makes me happier than to sit around a table with friends talking and laughing over good food and drink. Those are the memories that keep us coming back to New York City year and year.

========================================================

DISNEY FEATURE: Why Animal Kingdom Lodge Is 'The' Perfect Resort For Teenagers

========================================================

by Michelle Clark, PassPorter Message Board Guide and Guest Contributor

Probably the biggest decision a family makes when planning a trip to Walt Disney World is choosing where to stay. Even after deciding to stay "on property" (in a Disney-owned resort), the process has just begun. With over 20 resorts, Disney has a resort for just about any taste and budget. Each family is different and has unique likes and dislikes.

We decided to take our family to Walt Disney World during the Christmas season. Most of our prior trips had consisted of "commando" touring. Early on I learned an important tip: Get up early and hit the theme parks before the crowds arrive to avoid long lines. When my children became teenagers, I learned a new lesson: Teenagers don't want to get up early and hit the theme parks before the crowds arrive! So we decided that this trip would be a fun, low key, relaxing vacation. I promised that I would not pressure my kids to get out of bed and onto a theme park bus. After much deliberation, we selected the Animal Kingdom Lodge for this trip. It turned out to be the perfect choice for our teens, which made the trip much more enjoyable for Mom & Dad!

So what made Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge resort so appealing to our teens? Here are a few examples:

All guest rooms are accessible via interior corridors, and our kids wouldn't have to walk outside to separate buildings. This safety factor put Mom and Dad at ease. Also, our rooms had bunk beds, so no one had to share a bed with their sibling. Ahhh, the sound of peace!

We booked a pool view room, which was the perfect location -- close to the arcade and food court, two areas visited often by our teens. We felt completely comfortable sending them to the food court with their room key whenever they got the munchies. The menu at The Mara, the Lodge's food court, included those important staples in any teenager's diet -- hamburgers, french fries, chicken fingers, and pizza. The chocolate muffins were a big hit for a late breakfast. Of course every breakfast was a late breakfast for those sleepy teens! Since our room was so close to The Mara, it was quick and convenient to use the refillable mugs. And since you can pre-purchase an arcade card for video games, no more scrambling for quarters every day!

For family meals, Boma offers a great variety of food choices for everyone's tastes, from the adventurous eater to the sweet tooth to the picky eater. Our teens really enjoyed breakfast at Boma, especially the made-to-order omelets.

The expansive lobby of the Lodge has many seating areas, which is a perfect place for a teen to "chill out" when that hotel room becomes a bit crowded. Another one of their favorite places to sit and relax was around the fire pit located to the rear of the lobby at the Arusha Rock.

The pool has one of the best water slides on Disney property, and plenty of lounge chairs for sunbathers. The hot tub was another place our teens liked to hang out.

Did you think I wasn't going to mention the wildlife viewing? Even though we didn't have a savannah view room, our teens enjoyed watching the animals on the three savannahs. Their favorite time to see wildlife was at night when a Cast Member brought out night vision goggles. There was a balcony next to our elevator on Zebra Trail with rocking chairs and viewing binoculars. Our teens loved to take pictures there. There are also Cast Members posted at the savannah viewing areas to answer any questions about the animals.

There is so much to see and explore in the Animal Kingdom Lodge that it can keep even the shortest attention spans entertained. They found the various displays of artwork in the Lobby and the hallways interesting, and it is possible that they may even have learned something. Cast members are easy to find and love to volunteer information about the displays.

Zawadi Marketplace is probably their favorite gift shop in Walt Disney World. (Mine too!) They loved to browse through the collections of African-inspired gifts, as well as those classic Disney souvenirs. There is a large selection of jewelry, and they usually come back with quite a wish list. Often there is an artist in the shop drawing or painting who graciously allows teens to observe them at work.

We found the bus service at Animal Kingdom Lodge to be very efficient. We never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus, if at all. Since we let our older teens sleep in and join us later in the day at the theme park, we felt better knowing that they wouldn't wait long for a bus. Their two favorite parks, Animal Kingdom and the Disney Hollywood Studios were both short rides.

If you ask my teens today which Disney resort is their favorite, they will all answer without hesitation "Animal Kingdom Lodge." In fact, they have already told us that we should stay there on our next Disney trip. I'd recommend it to anyone planning a trip that includes teenagers!

DISNEY TIPS FROM FELLOW READERS

==========================================

Our readers deliver a wealth of information! Here are the winners in this month's tip contest:

FINDING FUN IN LINE

"Before our trip each year I go on-line and print out hidden pictures pages. I make them small (two to a page) and print several different ones. When we're waiting in line for a ride, or waiting for a show (like an hour-long wait for Fantasmic!) I'll break them out for my kids and even share with kids nearby. The kids love them. They trade when they're done with their own and it really keeps them quiet and focused during down-time."

-- contributed by Melissa R.

CAP CLIP

"When I tour the theme parks I wear a baseball cap, but I have a problem with it flying off on rides or leaving it behind in the net bags. So I wear a carabiner on a belt loop on my pants or shorts, and when I go into an attraction or get on a ride, I just clip the cap to the carabiner. Then the cap always stays with me, it is not in the way, and I don't leave it behind on the ride."

-- contributed by Larry F.

FRONT ROW FAVOR

"If you want to ride in the first row of Soarin', just ask a cast member! They will do their best to accommodate you. If you were originally in the center section, you may be seated in the first row of one of the sides, but the view is still terrific. If there are no more first row seats available, you may be permitted to wait until the next flight." (Editor's Note: Please note that this may not always be possible based on crowd levels, wait times, etc.)

CAPTAIN'S CORNER: Treasure Hunting Game

==========================================

Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, "PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World."

The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this "treasure" at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin or PassPorter name badge pin.

Here is this week's journal entry:

"It's barely a new year and already the winter doldrums are setting in. In pursuit of some sweet escapism, I took a spin over to my local 'drive-in." I think I got more than I bargained for, however, as this drive-in had a very surreal quality. The screen only showed trailers and commercials, no actual movies. I could see mountains in the distance despite the fact that I was in Florida. And none of the parked cars around me had doors. The only thing that seemed to make sense was the speed limit sign at the entrance... the posted speed limit is a mere (rest of text obscured by chocolate malt)."

What is the speed limit posted to the entrance of this 'drive-in,' and what is the drive-in's actual name? For bonus points, locate the photographic evidence in the PassPorter Photo Archive and post a comment with the photo!

Send your full answer to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in a future newsletter, along with the correct answer!

Congratulations to DeBestWife (Stephanie) who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! Stephanie was the first person to identify the location of the "painless dentist" Jack needed to seek out as Dr. Winch advertising at the beginning of the Country Bear Jamboree. Stephanie was also the first person to find the photo in the Photo Archive and post a comment. (We should also mention that she TOOK the photo too! )To view the original clue, see last week's newsletter at http://www.passporter.com/news/news122707.htm#captain

If you enjoy treasure hunts, we've got an entire book with over 100 distinct treasure hunts and over 1500 questions, complete with clues and contributions from Captain Jack Skatt. Q & A WITH JENNIFER & DAVE

====================================

lorilovestigger asks: "I've never flown anywhere where I didn't check my luggage. I'm trying to get everything I'll need for marathon weekend in my carry on. I think I can get it all in except for the items that need to be in a quart bag for security. I don't know how anyone can get all the things they need to take in a one quart ziploc bag. This is what I have in it: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, hairspray, Febreeze, eye drops, contact lens solution, liquid foundation, chapstick, lipstick, mascara, hand lotion, perfume, and shaving cream. Is there anything on that list that doesn't need to go into my ziploc bag?"

Dave and Jennifer answer: "It's always a question of when checked luggage becomes more bothersome than carry-on. Here we have a long list of items, nearly none of which I'd consider essential - with the exception of the eye drops and contact lens solution, none of these are "medical." Cosmetics are color- and brand-specific (not something you'd find in a gift shop), so they'd come along with you, but are all those cosmetics needed for "resort casual?" (I'm a guy, so I'm undoubtedly wrong about that.) Febreeze... luxury or necessity (what did you do in the days before it was available)? Yet, if you do consider them all essential, and you're not willing to substitute alternate brands (by purchasing them at the gift shop), then checked luggage may be the only solution.

Is the cost of purchasing toiletries once you're there and the time you'd spend buying them worth more (or less) than the value of the time you'd spend waiting for checked luggage?

Once upon a time I did a whole lot of backpacking. It gives you a whole new perspective on packing and on what is "essential."

Have a question? Post questions at http://www.passporterboards.com/ -- and if you're lucky, you may find that folks have already asked and answered the same question that's on your mind!
