FROM THE AUTHORS: First Bound Book!
====================================================
Hi, {{user('firstname')}}!
Last week, we shared the excitement of receiving the printed sheets of the new edition of PassPorter's Walt Disney World. This week, our printer went one step farther, by sending us one of the first bound copies of the new book. We have to say, looking at those printed sheets, with 32 pages strangely arrayed on both sides of a single, large sheet, can't hold a candle to seeing what happens when those pages are trimmed to size, collated in sequence, and bound, along with the fold-out maps and PassPockets, between the covers of a finished book! It does take a while for our printer to bind as many books as we print these days, but within two weeks we hope to have those books loaded into two 40-foot shipping containers and on their way across the Pacific. Meantime, we got a great suggestion from one of our readers following last week's newsletter. Would any of you like to own one of those big, glossy printed sheets? We lacked the time this week to pull things together, but perhaps by next week's newsletter we'll be ready to auction-off some of those sheets (autographed, of course), with the proceeds going to charity. Stay tuned!
Please Note: Monday, October 12 is Columbus Day and any orders placed over the weekend will ship on Tuesday, October 13.
New e-Book!
Well, the information isn't new or revised, but for the benefit of folks planning to sail the Mediterranean next year with DCL, we've re-packaged the port-of-call information from our 2007 (5th Edition) of PassPorter's Disney Cruise Line and its Ports of Call as an e-book for your reference. If you don't have a copy of that edition on your shelf, this should help take the "edge" off your curiosity while you wait for the 2010 edition of our DCL guide (due out in early 2010), which will have new/fully-updated info on all the ports DCL will be visiting. The new e-book is available at "retail" in the PassPorter store, and is also available to members of PassPorter's Club as a no-extra-charge benefit of club membership!
Decade of Dreams Disneyland Event!
Our Decade of Dreams 10th anniversary is taking PassPorter to Disneyland over the weekend of October 16-18, 2009! Everyone is welcome to join us for our festivities, which tentatively include a Mickey's Trick or Treat Party, Disneyland Quest Afternoon, and breakfast at Storyteller's Cafe (limited seating -- only 3 seats left now!). To learn more, check out our meet schedule and let us know if you can attend! We promise a great time for all. See you there!
PassPorter's Disney Weddings & Honeymoons E-Book Updated
A fourth revision of PassPorter's Disney Weddings & Honeymoons: Dream Days at Disney World and on Disney Cruises e-book is ready for download. Changes include new ceremony and reception venues (including a scuba wedding!), new venue pricing, new requirements for the complimentary room night, and the discontinuation of printed save-the-dates for the Wishes Collection. If you purchased the e-book from our online store, you can download the revised version by going to the PassPorter Store, logging into your account, locating the e-book in your Order History, and clicking the download link. TRAVEL FEATURE: Costa Blanca
========================================================
by Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist
Europe's Mediterranean coast is well known for its wonderful, year-round weather and beautiful beaches, and both have ensured a lasting appeal for Spain's Costa Blanca.
Costa Blanca literal means, "white coast." It's located in the southeast of Spain, about five hours from the country's capital, Madrid and also five hours down the coast from the beautiful city of Barcelona.
Because the main draw is the coastline, that’s where you'll find the majority of the development. Despite that, many towns still retain much of their original Spanish charm. We were lucky enough to be based in one of those towns, Moraira, which has yet to be discovered by the masses. It's easy to see how little it’s changed over the years. The main part of the town grew up around the town’s marina, with little shops and restaurants dotted along the seafront. Head further back inland and you’ll find villas and residences on hills that rise up from the sea. A car is an absolute must, as walking here would be quite a hike.
We headed up the coast one day to explore the route from Xabia, another resort town set on a hilltop, to Denia, a small family-oriented resort town a few miles farther north. The drive took us through some beautiful scenery, as we wound our way on roads that passed through park lands. It’s amazing how, as soon as you leave a town behind, it feels as if you’re in the middle of nowhere, with nothing in front of or behind you except open countryside. It makes getting away from it all a very easy past-time.
Down the coast from our base of Moraira was Calp, which is dominated by Penyal d’Ifach, a rocky outcrop that looks as it comes straight out of the sea. You can hike to the top, but looking at it was exhausting enough for us! Once again, the town is set around a marina, with some beautiful seafood restaurants to be found here.
The next town you come to is Altea, overlooking the sea and full of beautiful whitewashed buildings, as much of Spain is. It has attracted artists for many years and it’s easy to see why as you look around. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the town is now home to a number of galleries, which are presided over by the town’s blue-domed church.
Altea is also home to one of the area’s biggest flea markets, which has hundreds of stalls selling all sorts of souvenirs, including belts, handbags, clothes, and kitchen ware. It was a struggle to get out of there without losing a fortune. Everything was reasonably priced and very unique, although haggling with the sellers is part of the fun!
From Altea, you can head inland to one of the major attractions of the Costa Blanca – and one of the few that doesn’t involve beaches! The mountain community of Guadalest draws visitors from the major coastal resorts and it’s easy to see why. As we drove along narrow and winding roads to get to it, suddenly you could see the village appear before you on top of a rock! It’s the most bizarre sight and you can’t help but wonder how safe those buildings are.
Unsurprisingly, it’s quite a hike to reach those buildings, but well worth it. You pass through a sloping tunnel cut into the rock and emerge into a cobbled street. It’s almost as if you’ve stepped back in time as you come back out into the light. Guadalest was originally founded by the Moors, who carved the town and castle into the hillside. Sadly, very little apart from ruins remains of that castle, but there’s plenty to see in Plaza de San Gregorio, which is home to shops, cafés, and some beautiful views over a crystal clear reservoir below.
Most of the day trippers to Guadalest come from the bustling seaside resort of Benidorm, which has been a firm favorite of British travelers from the 1970s onwards. Today, it’s still packed with foreign visitors and, as a result, it’s become something of a concrete jungle, as developers compete to erect more hotels for those who come here. One look at the beach tells you why it’s still so popular today, sprawling for what feels like miles in front of you in a beautiful climate, with cafés littered along the seafront road.
On our visit here, we headed for the Bali Hotel, where, for a small fee, you can take an elevator to the outdoor viewing area on the roof. It certainly gives you the full measure of Benidorm as it sprawls beneath you. In the distance, we could see some of the theme parks that this place is well known for, including Terra Mitica, which is themed around Mediterranean civilizations and is packed with terrifying coasters and thrilling water rides.
Amazingly, we were only able to explore a small amount of what the Costa Blanca has to offer, and we’re already eagerly looking forward to our next visit out there, so we can explore that beautiful part of Spain more fully.

DISNEY FEATURE: The More, The Mickey-er
========================================================
by Nicole Courson, PassPorter Guest Contributor
Our first family trip to Walt Disney World was relatively straightforward; my husband Mike and I were taking the kids for a week. And no way my mom wasn’t coming. She, after all, took me on my first Disney vacation all those years ago and I couldn‘t wait for her to enjoy my boys as they visited for the first time. My brother Jimmy’s family had to come, because it wouldn‘t be a family vacation without them. And our best friends Jennifer and Jason, never the people to say no to a trip Orlando, readily signed on. Finally, there was my Aunt Pat and her mom Grandma Helen, who have a timeshare in Florida. Happily, they said yes, too. And just like that, our family trip for four had grown to fourteen!
Here’s a secret. If you’re going to Walt Disney World with a large group, planning is EVERYTHING!
Let’s talk resorts. The wonderful cast members at the Walt Disney World call center will assure you that every resort on property is family friendly -- and of course they’re right. But which resort is right for your group? It may seem as though you’ll only be sleeping there, but what about down time?
Of the four Value resorts (All-Star Music, All-Star Movies, All-Star Sports, and Pop Century), All-Star Music wins our “group” vote thaks to the Family Suites option. The resort boasts 52 units that sleep up to six in the Jazz Inn building, and each suite also has a second bath -- a bonus, with more than two or three people in a room.
The four Moderate resorts (Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs, Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter) all have slightly larger rooms -- but Coronado Springs stands above the crowd with additional amenities: four pools (the main one sports a 123-foot water slide and hot tub), comfy hammocks, an onsite fitness center, and a beauty/barber shop. All this within walking distance to your room!
The Deluxe resorts all come under the heading of, as my ten year old would say, “fancy shmancy.” While any one of them makes for a world-class stay, some have features that may appeal to your group more than others. Take, for instance, the Animal Kingdom Lodge. With three sit-down restaurants, three lounges, and virtually every room showcasing a balcony view, you‘ll want to be sure you pack your binoculars. Need childcare for a romantic evening? Animal Kingdom Lodge has it onsite!
Once the resort has been chosen, you can call Disney's Grand Gatherings at (407) 939-7256 to make your reservation. (Any group of eight or more people ages 3 and up can be made into a Grand Gathering.) Your group will be assigned a gathering number. This allows Walt Disney World to put a group into what they refer to as “priority room grouping” -- meaning that they’ll do their best to put an entire travel party in the same general vicinity, resort wise. It’s just one of those wonderful perks Walt Disney World offers free of charge. It will also help with dining reservations. Yes, dining reservations! Currently, they can be made ninety days out -- but as of October 27 2009, the system will be reverting to its former 180 days out policy. The Grand Gatherings department will help you make dining reservations for your group as the online dining reservation system will not accept reservations for more than nine people. Which brings us to dining!
Consider restaurant choices with everyone in mind. Vegetarians may not be crazy about ‘Ohana, just as young children may not enjoy Sunday lunch at the ESPN club during football season. Another tip? If the entire group doesn’t fit in at an ideal time, try booking two or more smaller parties. Or if there’s a specific “must do” restaurant that’s unable to take your dinner reservation, book lunch instead.
Another tip: look at the meals that serve “family style” seating. Biergarten, in Epcot, is a great place to enjoy an all-you-can-eat meal with groups. We found another good option to be 1900 Park Fare in the Grand Floridian -- they easily seated our party of fourteen. Lady Tremaine made an appearance with her two daughters, and then Cinderella and Prince Charming rounded out the parade of characters.
Which brings us to another hot topic: Character Meals!
Okay, everyone’s got to do one, just to get face time with that favorite mouse or princess. Chef Mickey’s, a buffet eatery in the Contemporary Resort, is a great place to snap photos with breakfast or dinner. There’s also the Crystal Palace or Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom, and Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in the Norway pavilion at Epcot.
Another tip: be sure to check out the Grand Gathering Experiences. They’re specifically designed for larger groups and include special experiences with a meal or dessert party. There’s a Safari Celebration Dinner, complete with private safari and dining at the Animal Kingdom's Tusker House; International Dinner and Illuminations Dessert Experience in Epcot (includes preferred seating for the evening’s IllumiNations attraction); or a Good Morning Character Breakfast. Details on all of these can be obtained by calling the Grand Gatherings hot line at 407-939-7526.
Okay, lastly, it’s time to tour!
It’s essential to have a plan for each day -- or, in the case of group traveling, several plans. Our first tip? Pick a centralized, easily visible location and announce it as the meet up spot for anyone who loses the party -- and yes, it will happen.
Another tip? Break in to sub-groups. The little kids all want to see Muppets 3D, dads are yelling for Star Tours and some of the older members would rather see the One Man’s Dream attraction. Instead of leap-frogging all over and making people wait, part ways and plan to regroup in front of the Sorcerer’s Hat in an hour. Two-way radios and cell phones are also helpful in keeping a group together.
Another great sub-group strategy? Breaking down early-in-the-day activities. Our friends Jenn and Jason liked to skip breakfast so they could hit the parks running , then break for lunch and a nap before their evening plans. Jimmy and his wife Candace took a different approach: they chose to eat a slightly-later breakfast, tour straight through the day, then eat an early dinner and get back to the hotel at a reasonable hour for relaxing, thereby avoiding the opening and closing rushes. We fell somewhere in the middle and hit serendipity: four hours between Jim and Candace’s breakfast but before Jenn and Jason left for lunch were perfect for the kids to spend time together.
Our next trip, in December 2010, is in the planning stages. It will, of course, include my mother -- I think she had as much fun as my boys the last time around. And my mother-in-law and father-in-law, who wouldn’t miss the chance to see all their collective grandchildren in the Happiest Place on Earth, because we’ll be joined by Mike’s brother Ben and his family, Mike’s sister Becky and her family, and Mike’s brother Andrew, plus Mike‘s stepbrother John and his kids. Oh, and of course Jenn and Jason and their kids because now that we’ve visited Walt Disney World with them, my kids won’t have it any other way (truthfully, neither would I). Jenn’s parents, who are like extended family to us, too, are in.
“Twenty-six,” I told Mike, tallying it up. “Twenty-six people. Eight men, seven women, four princesses and seven princes. It‘s eighteen months away, so we‘d better start planning.”
He blinked at me. “Good luck.”
I love a challenge.

PARADE PLANNING
'The 8:00 pm parade down Main Street makes getting to a 8:20 pm reservation at the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station Dessert Party for a view of the 9:00 pm fireworks almost impossible. Make sure to take this into consideration when calculating how long it will take you to get there!'

DCL CASTAWAY CAY 5K
'Everyone knows that part of the "magic" onboard a Disney Cruise are the wonderful meals that are served whenever you want. However, few people are aware of the ways that are available to help burn the extra "energy" we all consume onboard. I am a casual runner and have found it VERY difficult to run while onboard. So when I checked my Personal Navigator the evening before our day at Castaway Cay, I was ecstatic to find that there was a family 5K that morning. The group of about 12 met immediately off the ship, and the crew member took us over to the map of the island to show us the running route, then off we went. The running trail took us past the family beach, Cookies BBQ, bike & float rentals, to the air strip, around the bike trail to the observation tower, then to Serenity Bay and back. This was not a race by any means, but designed to be a casual run. Throughout the course, the cast members that saw us running were cheering us on (things you typically only hear during race-like conditions). I recall hearing things such as "Keep your head up, you can finish," and, "It's not that hot...keep going, you can do it." In the end, the best part of the run was the finish (and not just because it was over!). Our group of 12 had randomly met together that morning, and there was little time for any conversation, as we needed to get started before the heat became too intense. But at the end, we cheered each other on to finish strong. Some of the group ended up finishing before the crew member had, but we stayed and waited for the last person to finish, with a few members of the group running up to them to finish the run together.'

SAVE HOTEL POINTS FOR FUN
'When I travel on business I try to stay at a hotel for which I have a membership so that I can earn points. My favorite is Sheraton. Then when it is time for a visit to Disneyland, I use those points to stay at the Sheraton Hotel on Ball Road. The rooms are very comfortable and the hotel has a free shuttle to the resort that runs every half hour starting an hour before the park opens to an hour after the park closes. The hotel will also let me leave my car in their parking lot on check-out day so I can enjoy the day at the park without paying the fees to park in the Disney lots. They do charge for parking at the hotel; however, it is less than Disney's charge and when you are getting the room for free you can't complain!'

The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this "treasure" at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. Here is this week's journal entry:
"Why are folks always so surprised to hear I like to watch TV? It's true ... I like my cartoons, especially Mickey Mouse. There's nothing quite like a great cartoon and an afternoon snack the way mom used to make. One of my favorite spots to combine these two is Prime Time Cafe. I could stare at those TVs for hours! And I did just that the other day. I only tore my eyes away from Mickey Mouse for a moment to notice the TV itself ... and was surprised to see the brand of TV. It's no wonder I had such a good time!
What brand is the TV at 50s Prime Time Cafe?"

Congratulations to who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! was the first person to identify the answer to last week's clue as at the bottom of a portrait of Walt Disney in at One Man's Dream at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Q & A WITH JENNIFER & DAVE
====================================
Chris Wangard asks: "We are considering dropping off a rental car from a pre-cruise trip to Vero Beach at the Dollar office in Cape Canaveral and taking a taxi to the Disney Cruise Line terminal. Has anyone used a taxi in Port Canaveral? How was your experience? Did they seem to have an abundance of minivans? If not, we my need two cabs for our family of 5."
Dave answers: "I can't say whether there's an abundance or not, but they do have them. Availability seems to be pretty good, but you'll be needing a cab during one of the highest-demand periods of the week, so don't count on immediate availability. The good news is that, except when the cabs are headed out to MCO, they're taking fairly short trips back and forth to the cruise terminal so the wait shouldn't be horrible if you do have to wait.
However, I strongly encourage you to drop your family and luggage at the cruise terminal before you drop off the rental car. That way you won't run into the seating (and luggage) capacity problem at all, and you'll have a lot less baggage handling. You might even be able to share a cab to the ship with someone you meet at the rental place (but don't count on it). Whoever is dropping off the car should keep his/her carry-on. Everything else can be handed over to the porters at curbside. The family can go into the terminal and you can catch up with them later."
