Two things are clear to everyone who’s visited a number of Disney resorts over the years. They all benefit from exceptional theming and are all very different from one another. But which one is your favorite? PassPorter message board guide and regular newsletter contributor Cheryl Pendry believes there can be no argument – the Beach Club and their Villas are best!
Our love affair with the Beach Club began appropriately enough on our honeymoon in 1999. We had debated long and hard over where we should stay for our first visit to a Disney resort, but felt that we couldn’t justify the cost of a deluxe hotel. We’d never visited one, but surely nothing could be good enough to warrant spending that much money? We narrowed our choice down to a moderate and we went for Dixie Landings, or Port Orleans Riverside as it’s known today. Our first couple of days there were magical, the grounds were green and lush and it was a wonderfully romantic place to stay. We knew we had made the right decision – that was, until we walked into the lobby of the Beach Club.
We thought we’d take the opportunity to find out what was so special about the deluxe resorts and whether it was worth saving all our money to stay in one eventually. I was skeptical, but from the second we were met by Art the Greeter at the front door, I knew that this place was something special. The spacious lobby with its high ceilings and white balconies looking down from the second floor gave a relaxed feel, something clearly being enjoyed by those seated on the series of comfortable chairs, who were just watching the world go by.
And that’s something you can do plenty of at the Beach Club. Head out through the other side of the lobby and you’re greeted by white wooden rocking chairs, with a view over the resort’s beautifully manicured gardens, looking towards Crescent Lake and the BoardWalk opposite. Walk a few more steps and talk a look back towards the resort. From the first time I saw that view, it bowled me over. The pale blue shade of the buildings were exactly what I’d always imagined a beachside villa to look like and the shade was far more appealing that the dull cream of the neighboring Yacht Club.
Captivated by the theming of the resort on our first visit, it was time to explore further, and no visit is complete without seeing the resort’s main pool, Stormalong Bay. Calling it a pool may be unfair though, it’s more like a mini water park, sprawling over a couple of acres with something for all ages and all abilities of swimmers. Boasting a children’s pool, water slide, whirlpools in the main swimming area and a deep swimming area providing more of a challenge to regular swimmers, it even offers a poolside bar in the shape of Hurricane Hanna’s, if you need a snack or want to sip a cocktail in the sunshine. But be warned, there’s no way that you’ll be able to experience the delights of Stormalong Bay unless you’re a guest at the Yacht Club, Beach Club or the neighboring Villas. You are expected to bring your resort ID for a swim and are given wristbands showing that you are resort guests before you can enjoy the facilities. No resort ID, no access to Stormalong Bay – it’s that simple.
Having a lot of good places to eat at a resort is another important thing for us. Let’s face it, we all have mornings and evenings when we don’t want to stray far from our room for a meal – and we don’t have to at the Beach Club. Enjoy character breakfasts with Goofy, Minnie and those mischievous chipmunks Chip and Dale at the Cape May Café, just off the main lobby, which by night serves up a New England-style clambake.
Carry on past the Cape May Café and you’ll come across a lovely lounge, Martha’s Vineyard, which never seems to be crowded. Wine, beer, cocktails (even that famous Kungaloosh from the Adventurer’s Club) can all be bought here, along with a series of snack items. Out through the doors, past some of Stormalong Bay and on your right is the home of arguably the best burgers on Disney property – and surely the biggest dessert? Both can be found at Beaches and Cream, a 1950’s style diner, with its Kitchen Sink, packed full of bananas, ice cream, cookies, chocolate fudge cake, cream, cherries, nuts and chocolate sauce. Perhaps it’s easier to describe what’s not contained in it. Eat every bit of it on your own and you’ll get it for free – on all our visits to Beaches and Cream, it’s not a feat we’ve ever seen accomplished.
A quick walk past the rest of Stormalong Bay into the adjoining Yacht Club opens up more dining possibilities at the upscale Yachtsman Steakhouse or the more informal Yacht Club Galley. There’s another lounge to indulge in just off the Yacht Club lobby called the Crew’s Cup. And that’s before exploring the restaurants at the Swan, Dolphin or the BoardWalk, all nearby.
On your way there, you’ll also spot Lafferty Place Arcade, somewhere you can easily lose the kids and those “kids at heart” in your family for a couple of hours, as they enjoy the many games in there. The Ship Shape Health Club allows you to work out during your vacation or if that doesn’t sound like much fun, you can book yourself a massage. There’s even a salon called Periwig’s Beauty and Barber Shop, offering hair, skin and nail care for more pampering.
But it’s no longer just about the Beach Club. Recognizing the appeal of the resort, the Disney Vacation Club started construction work on the Villas in 2000 and it was fascinating to see them rise from the ground on our stay at the Beach Club in that year. Obviously, we’re not the only ones who love the Beach Club, as the Villas sold out in record time. Similarly themed to the main Beach Club complex, but with the accent on sea green, the Villas enjoy their own quiet pool, called Dunes Cove, and public rooms to sit back and relax in, with one boasting its own TV with cartoons for the kids to enjoy. With the arrival of the Villas, another communal room was added to the original Beach Club complex, the Solarium, a delightfully airy conservatory-type room. Again, it never seems to be busy, but it’s a lovely place to sit and unwind.
Beautiful theming, the best pool on Disney property, a great range of restaurants and lots of places to relax and watch the world go by – what more could you want from a hotel? How about a location that’s so central that you can walk to two theme parks if you choose to. Epcot is no more than a ten minute walk from the Beach Club lobby, but if you’re staying in the Villas or at the eastern edge of the Beach Club, it’s more like five minutes. At this end of the resort, you’re closer to the park than the resort's marina.
The Marina allows you to catch a boat to either Epcot MGM, or the BoardWalk, but in reality it’s nearly always quicker to walk to Epcot. MGM is another matter. If you’re a quick walker and there’s no boat in sight, you can walk faster, but the boat is a charming, albeit slow way of getting to MGM. It is a picturesque routes though, with water views of the Swan and Dolphin along the way, which eventually gives way to the Tower of Terror and finally the Sorcerer’s Hat as you approach the Studios.
You really couldn’t wish for a more centrally located hotel at Disney. Even the monorail resorts can’t boast excellent transport links to two parks – and there’s no other hotel where you can walk into a park in just a few minutes.
What’s not to love about the Beach Club? It’s got it all and there’s surely no other resort on Disney property that can compete with its central location, amazing pool, wonderful theming and range of places to eat. What do you think?

Great start  More please Colexis Mom on May 11, 2007 @ 11:58 am Awesome start, Dicecatt!! I'm hoping to steal some of your ideas, as we are doing a pretty short trip in October. My DD is 8 and just getting tall enough to do most of the rides now, too. Makes things much easier KirstenR on May 11, 2007 @ 12:01 pm So...we enter the DME bus line and board a bus for Pop Century almost immediately. First stop was Pop, and was continuing on to Coronado Springs and Animal Kingdom Lodge.
First impression of Pop...Everything is very big! Line at check in was minimal, waited about 5 minutes. The CM was very nice. I asked if my requests had been received and they had...I was in the 70’s building. I booked a standard view but it was close to bus stop, and it was ready at 11 AM. Building 10 on the third floor. I’m excited to see the Big Wheel; I loved my Big Wheel as a child! So, we get near our room and see the lake...very nice! Then we see the window and a half eaten apple...I am not too pleased. Put my keycard in the door...won’t open. Try again, won’t open. Look at my map...DUH, I am in the room next door.
Here is my view:
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-041.jpg http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-037.jpg
My room is nice and clean and apple free. Very small, but clean, and I love the Disco wall border.

We head out to the bus stop and we are on a bus to Epcot within 5 minutes. So far, I am very impressed with my first Value resort. The grounds are neat and trimmed, the pool areas are sparkling, and the resort gives off a vibe of fun.
Upon entering Epcot, we saw some of the awesome topiaries there for the Flower and Garden Festival.
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-055.jpg
We got a FP for Test Track. Did Universe of Energy for the first time, waited about 6 minutes in the scorching hot sun. Drama’s soda exploded in line, that was fun. Luckily the only person she squirted was me. Cute preshow. Ellen is fun, and I love Jamie Lee Curtis no matter what she plays, even “Stupid Judy”. Very long ride, but air conditioned and relaxing. At times, it even feels a bit like Soarin! I recommend you sit in the far left row of seats, that one moves forward first.
To be continued...
Dicecatt on May 11, 2007 @ 12:43 pm Chefs de France
Reservations were for 2:30 but they sat us around 1:45. Service was very attentive. Drama got the Friand au Fromage, which was a cheese puff pastry, and Goofy got the Blanc de Poulet Aux Nouilles, breaded chicken strips over pasta. Neither of them ate squat although Drama liked my lobster bisque. I did too; I thought it was better than Fulton’s Crabhouse and glad I chose it over the onion soup although I love onion soup. I also ordered the Quiche Lorraine which was decent. The restaurant is bright and airy, and people watching through the windows is fun. We watched the chair climber performers in amazement!

Then we went to Mexico and rode El Rio or whatever it is called now. Not many changes, more cartoonish stuff on the TV screens with Donald. Most everything else is still there and there was no wait.
Time for Test Track, gosh I love this ride. It is fun every single time. Not for the standby line people, but for me breezing in on a FP, very fun. Was that mean? Just kidding, I’m sure they had fun too, and after all, it is inside. Next, Spaceship Earth, my last ride before the rehab. I like it the way it is!
Heading back to Pop around 5 PM. More pictures of Pop:

Shopped in the Gift Shop, went to our room, and no luggage. Hmmm, it has been over 7 hours, it was now 5:35. Called...one was brought up at 6 PM. Where is the other? No one knows. Of course it is my suitcase. Easier to replace kid clothes! Eventually about 45 minutes later my bag was located and was brought up to my room. Meanwhile, I took the kids swimming and I just sat and watched them as jeans are not conducive to a dip in the pool. I began on a towel quest...I see Towel Return...where, oh where, are the towels? Asked a lifeguard, told I am supposed to bring them from my room. Okayyy...didn’t know that. Interesting. The kids pool hopped between the Hippy Dippy and the Bowling Pin Pool. Drama said her favorite is the Computer Pool, but she didn’t swim in it...she has to be different.
Dinner was counter service, I ordered the Shrimp Lo Mein, that was pretty good, and the kids got burgers and pizza. They were just okay.
My impressions of Pop is that it is well worth the money. You can’t beat staying on Disney property in a nice, clean, fun hotel for under $100. The rooms are small, but you know that going in...the bathroom is adequate. I loved the Disco dancing people on the wall border. Actually, I think I already said that! The twister games around the resort look fun. No hot tubs, that is a negative, but then again the Poly, my favorite, doesn’t have one either. Beautiful magnolia trees on property! One bizarre question...do the TVs not have remotes? I did not have one...not sure if that is just because I didn’t merit one or they really don’t have remotes.
End Day 1 Dicecatt on May 11, 2007 @ 12:54 pm Excellent start so far. Love the food pictures - I've never eaten at Chefs de France.
Keep it comin'. mattnkatsmum on May 11, 2007 @ 1:49 pm Excellent trip report, more please TinkerBelts on May 11, 2007 @ 2:22 pm you are off o a great start! glad you and the twins are enjoying some new experiences.

Woke up at 6 AM with Mickey and Stitch screaming in the phone. First I had to shake Drama so she could answer the phone.
We departed Pop after filling up our mugs, and arrived at Wilderness Lodge around 7:15 AM. CM Freddie checked me in, and I inquired if my requests had been received. He brought out a map, and said “Here is your room. You requested a view of the pool and the geyser, and you have that, but I have also made your stay a little more magical and put you in concierge!” Wow Wow Wow, and my 2 year old (Spoiled) would say. So, we took the elevator up to our keyed level and enjoyed a breakfast in the Old Faithful Club, sitting at a table overlooking the magnificent lobby.

We went out to the boat dock to go to the Magic Kingdom. Transportation by boat was not wonderful...we waited for quite a while, and saw 2 resort boats come and go. Finally we jumped on the 3rd resort boat and got off at the Contemporary and just walked to the Magic Kingdom.
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-129.jpg
We saw the opening ceremony; the characters on the train were very fun!
Once inside, we cut through the Noodle Station and got FP for Space. Saw Monsters Inc. Comedy Club, which was very cute. They highlighted me and asked me some questions and my kids were thrilled when I played along and joked with the characters. Then we rode Astro Orbitor with no wait. I’ve never ridden it because I get sick from spinning, but with my handy dandy motion sickness patch, I gave it a go. And it was fun! I liked seeing Tomorrowland all empty.
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-132.jpg
Then Pirates, about a 5 minute wait. Got a FP for BTMRR and rode Splash. I got completely soaked, more than I ever have been on that ride...I mean completely soggy. Then rode BTMRR. We then went over to Tom Sawyer Island, which we’ve never done. We were hoping to explore a little, and get a snack, but Aunt Polly’s was closed. I wasn’t all that thrilled with the Island...we didn’t stay long. I called as I sat with a soda on the Island and the room at Wilderness Lodge was not ready yet.
We wanted to ride Haunted Mansion, but I could see from the Island the line. So we got some French Fries and a FP for Jungle Cruise. Back in Tomorrowland, Space is down. We just missed them giving out Dream Fast Passes outside of the exit of Space...darn it! Then we did Stitch’s Great Escape...I escaped that one last trip because I stayed off with Spoiled. It wasn’t bad, I just held my nose. Then Carousel of Progress, lovely air conditioning and one of my favorite rides. We walked down Main Street through some shops down to Tony’s, and tried to switch our 2:50 to around 1 PM, but the wait was too long so we just went back to Wilderness Lodge. We went in the gift shop there and I checked out the lobby of Wilderness Lodge Villas.
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-138.jpg
Drama bought some rocks and Mickey earrings. Room still wasn’t ready, at about 2:30, so we sat in the lounge of the concierge and watched TV and snacked. I changed Artist Point to 5:40 instead of 7:30, so we can have dinner and then go back to Magic Kingdom.
Room was ready at 3 PM. I loved the room and the view was stunning. Absolutely gorgeous, I felt like I had the perfect spot. Towel animal!!!
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-139.jpg http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-152.jpg http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-008.jpg
We went swimming next. Our luggage was brought up right away so the kids changed quickly. I relaxed and read while they swam.
We checked into Artist point at 5:30, and waited in the lounge. I sipped a beer from concierge (I love concierge, have I mentioned that yet?). I am really looking forward to dinner. Estelle sat us by a window, and Pok was our server. She was so pleasant and nice.
I ordered the Hatfield Pork Chop, wow it was delicious. The kids barely ate, of course, but ordered to share a bowl of watermelon and penne pasta with cheese sauce. They made pictures and got certificates stating they were Artists of the Day. I made it a point at the end of the meal to find the manager and tell him what magnificent service and food I experienced, and he gave me his business card. I was very impressed with Artist Point and we will be returning!
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-155.jpg http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/Dicecatt/Disney%20May%202007/th_5-8-2007-156.jpg
After dinner we went back to Magic Kingdom. This time the boat transportation arrived more quickly. We used fast pass to get on Space, and then rode Buzz. We hit the 100,000 again! I’m not sure exactly where it is but I know around where to start shooting and I got it! Then Haunted Mansion. As much as I love it, the sound went out, and at one point the ride totally stopped.
It was around 8:30 and I wanted to get out of Magic Kingdom before Wishes, so we took the monorail to the Poly and watched Wishes, and then beat it to a cab back to the Wilderness Lodge and caught the Electrical Water Pageant from our balcony. Then we stopped by the lounge and got sodas and cookies, and went outside to swim. The hot tub feels great on tired legs!
I wish we had another day at Wilderness Lodge, I love it.
End Day 2, to be continued! Dicecatt on May 14, 2007 @ 3:54 pm Great update! What a great day at MK, and what a great meal at Artist Point :yummy: Great pictures too! I'll have to check out your report! I loved the WL, definitely. I was incredibly lucky to have been upgraded. Looking forward to more. tammyd_rn on May 16, 2007 @ 10:27 am So here's the big question. Which place did you like better AKL or WL? It seems like everyone has an opinion on that! musicteachermom on May 16, 2007 @ 1:17 pm Tricky, tricky question...WL or AKL better? One I've pondered over time and again.
The answer? It depends on what type of trip. For me, neither are an option most of the time, because I have a family of 6 (1 under 3). Currently, we have limited options unless we want to spend more cash...leaving out the villas, that time will come. POR, GF, Contemporary, Poly, Beach & Yacht Club, maybe Boardwalk, I'm not sure what the limit is there. WL and AKL are too small. So...my answer? I'm still not sure.
If I were to book with just my DH and me...I'd go with WL, hands down. If I were to book with my oldest child, WL. If I were to go with my little one...AKL. The twins are split...one liked WL and one liked AKL better. It also depends on how much time you spend at the resort. If you plan on spending a lot of time at the resort, I'd go with AKL with Savannah view. If you plan on spending not as much time at the resort, WL. WL has a lot to enjoy, but I think if you are in your room a lot the animals are so interesting to watch. Dicecatt on May 16, 2007 @ 1:33 pm Just catching up. Great so far. Looking forward to more! More please Colexis Mom on May 16, 2007 @ 2:54 pm Wow, you do mean Whirlwind tour! Interesting idea, staying only one night per resort. If I could do what you did (leave dh and two of the four kids at home) I would consider that. Sounds like you tried lots of excellent restaurants and got quite a bit of touring in. Hope to read more! mom to 3 princesses and 1 prince on May 16, 2007 @ 6:48 pm Great day at AK....glad you saw plenty ofanimalson Safari. Looks like the kids really enjoyed AKL,too!
danielle disneydani on May 16, 2007 @ 10:15 pm Sounds like you had a fantastic time. And what amazing rooms you scored, both at AKL and WL. mattnkatsmum on May 17, 2007 @ 1:08 am Great update! Love Drama's face painting! PrincessSharon on May 17, 2007 @ 10:43 am Loved your review of Behind The Seeds! Sorry you didn't like Boma that much, but at least you got to experience it. And Storytime sounds like it was really fun! ilovedisney0_0 on May 21, 2007 @ 11:56 am  the thumbnail pix!! This is a really fun TR. Thanks for sharing it with us.
BTW, my 7 yo nieces are twins born Moriah natural and Rylee c-section. Always seemed like a terrible injustice to me, but it IS a great story. We call them Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Cat in the Hat. (they're pretty distructive)
More TR please!! KirstenR on May 25, 2007 @ 1:09 am That was a great idea and one I'll have to consider sometime, I love the thought of spending one night in each hotel! Like you, we also have 4 kids. Wendyismyname on June 12, 2007 @ 5:48 pm I'm really enjoying your report! I also agree that AKL is more "worth it" if you plan on spending a lot of time in your room.
I have to admit I'm looking forward to the AKVs though.
